    Does anyone know how Kramer got the shadow effect on the corners of his video for the intro to the serious fx podcast? I am assuming it was a spotlight and not a mask because there is some bleeding through of the background. I am trying to acheive this same effect with a white background and am having a lot of trouble. Any suggestions?

    Almost certainly it was indeed a mask… an oval one with a heavy feather (set to “subtract”) on a black solid layer probably set to a layer blend mode of “Classic Color Burn” or something similar, and a very low opacity. This is a technique Andrew uses repeatedly on his DVD training (HIGHLY recommended) and in tutorials included in his product “Riot Gear” (also HIGHLY recommended) which can both be found at his website: videocopilot.net

    (no I don’t work for him)

    I know this probably isn’t as much of an incentive to use a vignette… but… I use it a lot as well (;

    I try not to overuse it, but it’s such an easy effect to add. It can make things look immediately richer as it’s reminiscent of old film footage. It also often times helps draw attention to the center of the screen and gives ‘depth’ to the footage.
