  • Adjust a Multiplied Layer?

Perhaps my approach needs to be revised..?
I have a SPFX video layer with a white background on top of the subject video layer. I have applied Multiply blending to this SPFX layer, and the composite works fine – good.
Now I need to make adjustments to this SPFX layer to match the subject. However, any adjustments made to this layer apply to the whole layer – of course, which reveals the white background of this SPFX layer – not good.
This SPFX video file has no Alpha or Matte, just a white background. Is there a way to generate a quality matte for this file, or simply make adjustments (eg:Bright/Cont.) to this effect-layer without disturbing the success of the Multiply blend mode?
Note – The effect layer has no hard edges, it is viscous and is mostly transparent.

No idea if this would work but just something I would try…

Duplicate your footage. To the bottom of the two layers, change the blending mode to Luma Matte (or try inverted luma matte… I don’t remember which). You may have to apply the levels effect to the top layer to push the white to an acceptable level. This should key out the white, I think, leaving you with just your foreground subject. Next, pre-compose these two layers (make sure you move all attributes to the new composition). This should leave you with one layer in the timeline, at a “normal” blending mode, with the alpha channel you desire. You can now make adjustments to this one layer and your alpha should still be respected.

Someone may have a better suggestion but this is what I’d try. Good luck!
