No idea if this would work but just something I would try…
Duplicate your footage. To the bottom of the two layers, change the blending mode to Luma Matte (or try inverted luma matte… I don’t remember which). You may have to apply the levels effect to the top layer to push the white to an acceptable level. This should key out the white, I think, leaving you with just your foreground subject. Next, pre-compose these two layers (make sure you move all attributes to the new composition). This should leave you with one layer in the timeline, at a “normal” blending mode, with the alpha channel you desire. You can now make adjustments to this one layer and your alpha should still be respected.
Someone may have a better suggestion but this is what I’d try. Good luck!

September 5, 2006 at 5:17 pm in reply to: adding blood effect to shot footage- please help asapeee… I’ll have to defer to someone else on this. I mean, you could always motion track the person’s eyes or some other feature of the face and position the blood (offset to the nose or mouth) to match the movement of the head. But the smearing, dripping part is tough… at least in a way so as to not make it look so fake as to be distracting. Certainly there are ways to do a smearing and/or dripping effect such as:
https://media.libsyn.com/media/aftereffectscow/CC_Horror_Writing_Part_B_PODiPod_Lo.mp4
But getting it to appear on a moving face and have it be convincing with the same lighting, etc. is tough.
If it works for the feel of the movie, you could also change the color of the footage as the character is getting hit to an oversaturated red and/or sharply wiggle the position of the movie in sync with each hit to somewhat hide the lack of blood but still have the violent feel. Not sure if this is clear. And of course, not sure if it’s in keeping with the feel of the movie. Just something that came to me.
Perhaps someone else has a better idea. Best of luck!

September 5, 2006 at 4:25 pm in reply to: adding blood effect to shot footage- please help asapPart 1:) if you need “blood” footage, get this:
https://videocopilot.net/action.html
Part 2:) one example of using said footage to live action:

WARNING!! Gory, not for kids. And it may not be exactly what you’re looking for in your shot but it might give you a jumping off point.

If it’s what I think it is, try duplicating your layer (if you only have one) OR adding an adjustment layer to the top (if you have multiple layers).
Apply a fast blur or gaussian blur effect to this top-most layer. Change its blending mode (screen if you want to brighten up, multiply to darken, or Overlay for drama). This will give a blurry glow to your footage. Adjust the opacity of this layer and/or the blur amount of the effect to taste.
I hope this is close to what you are after.

From Aharon Rabinowitz’ tutorial:
https://media.libsyn.com/media/aftereffectscow/CC_Film_Flash_Full_POD.m4v
You’ll need Quicktime 7 to view.
Basically it involves applying the “Levels” effect to the project (say, to an adjustment layer). Good information. I highly recommend watching this and Aharon’s other tutorials.

the left-bracket key will align the start of the selected layer to wherever the playhead is. So move your playhead to 19:15 (if you don’t want to do this by hand, use the keyboard shortcut: command+G on the Mac or control+G on the PC and type “1915” then hit Enter), then hit the left-bracket key. The whole thing should take about 1-2 seconds.
FWIW the RIGHT bracket key will align the END of the selected layer to the playhead in a similar fashion.
Hope this helps!

Not for text, no. But Dean Velez has a plethora of them at his website (over 80 if I counted right). And I’m sure you could tweak some for text.:
You’ll see the links in the middle of the pages. Scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see one for 57 unique ones. I also highly recommend his training, for what it’s worth.

You could go to http://www.theanvel.com and follow the link to the 57 free AEP’s. They’re cool to have anyway and the Cow’s Dean Velez did a great job with these. Back on topic, one of the 57 AEP’s is a DNA helix. Here’s the link:
https://161.58.43.159/free_aeps_detail.php?aeps=85
Check out the flash-based video of the effects… I think the DNA one is about 7 or 8 in. Hope this helps! (and kudos to Dean Velez first for creating and second for providing).

July 12, 2006 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Adding NEW layer – making it the same size and position as previous layer…If I were doing it, I’d try to DUPLICATE the layer you’d like to match, timewise. That is to say, select Layer 32 (in your example and hit ctrl+d on a PC or command+d on a Mac. Then if it’s a solid, you can change its color (Shift+ctrl+y), if it’s text you can highlight and retype, change to an adjustment layer, etc. Might not work in every situation (matching a solid layer with a text layer), but that’s the first thing that comes to mind.
