And for less than a hundred bucks you could get a USB drive and save the movie to that drive in a plethora of different codecs.

My guess is that any area of picture that is not changed by the added video layer will remain nearly identical when recompressed. This was pretty true of the old Avid AVR 77…as long as you didn’t change the pixels, it recompressed a nearly identical copy.
I think you are fine with ProRes.

It does look like a compelling product however compression comes in all shapes and sizes. Episode is still the best all around tool, and having solid compressor skills helps. Tools like MPEGStreamclip are also part of the arsenal.
CompressHD is fine for accelerating H264 encoding, but that is only part of the picture. Of course now that Flash supports H264 there is the chance that it could become 70% or more of our encoding tasks.
dI have an Octo Mac and I have to say that it performs very well with anything we throw at it. Would the CompressHD be faster? Probably. Make me altogether more productive…maybe.
I think it depends on your workload…if you are doing 90% H264 encoding and you need speed, it’s a great option. But if you need a great swiss army knife of encoders, Episode is a great start.

Sounds like the camera is not set to record QT. You have a choice what format to record…can’t recall how JVC describes the two, but one is definitely QT and FCP compatible.

We have had good luck using Nattress Standards Converter right in FCP. It is a unique workflow so follow the steps closely but you will have good results. Export the PAL clips and encode in compressor…compressor will see that theya re PAL and encode accordingly. AC3 encoding does not change.
Then author in DVDSP as a PAL disc.
Voila.

BTW, another reason to choose a vendor is proximity. Media Mega Mall is in the midwest so shipping is usually two days to me UPS Ground. Any west coast dealer and it can be 5 days which usually doesn’t work for us. So that should be another reason to choose one over another, as well as shipping charges.

Best I know of for all disc media and use all the time and has great prices and the best quality is

And I use taperesources.com for some media but we have a local guy who delivers in a couple hours for free so we use him for most tape.

Get MPEG Streamclip and export the AVI from there. You’ll find a lot more codecs and one I use is PhotoJPEG at 75%. As long as they have QT loaded on their pcs the AVI can be read.

I would make sure what codec they prefer. I would also recommend running the datarate at 10 frames per second. Audio is mono for sure. I would probably go WMV and keep the frame size pretty small, around 192 x 144 or maybe one size up.
In any case it’s gonna be a tiny window. I would also work on a 1 minute chunk and do some tests then measure the file size by 12.
Oh, and if they are thinking they are clever keeping to to 10 megs because it can be emailed, they will actually have to hit closer to 7 megs because once an email app encodes it for delivery it blows up about 2 megs.

I was looking at an errors and omissions insurance policy that would cover exactly this situation. You probably wouldn’t get MORE than you paid the first shooter, but it would go a long way to appease the client and get the shots you need.
