What is the EXACT message you are getting?

Can you open the movie in Quicktime? When you do that press CMD-I to GET INFO and see what it says next to FORMAT.

Sounds like the camera is not set to record QT. You have a choice what format to record…can’t recall how JVC describes the two, but one is definitely QT and FCP compatible.

Because the JVC camera uses proprietary EX code you will still need to download the Sony Xdcam EX codec and drivers to gain functionality.

Rich and Gary are right. The JVC gives you two options: to record as FCP-friendly native QT or to record in the XDCAM-EX codec (i.e. mp4) which will require conversion before you can edit in FCP.

I’d go with the third party software for now, then re-read you JVC manual before your next shoot to make sure you get QT next time.

Thanks for the assistance. It seem that all I needed to do was update my FCP software.

Now it works just as they say!

I can drag my .mov files right from the SD card to the bin and start cutting if I want. Nice!

and can you edit your JVC footage as a multi-clip with footage from another format?

In my scenario, the update to Final Cut was the key. My files were shot in the FCP friendly Quicktime wrapper, but would not load in and/or play correctly until I manually ran software update and got some add-ons. This was AFTER installing FC Studio 2, so be mindful of that. Before the manual update, I was running FCS2 6.0.1, now running 6.0.5, and it works perfectly without downloading the Sony codec.

There is JVC ProHD LOG AND TRANSFER PLUG-IN Version 1.0.1 available from the JVC website

Overview
JVC ProHD Log and Transfer plug-in can be used with Final Cut Pro for editing MP4 clips recorded by JVC ProHD equipments. You can preview MP4 clips and transfer to QuickTime movie file by installing this software.
They also give the following warning:-

If you have already installed Sony XDCAM EX Log and Transfer Plugin Version1.0.0 to your system and then install JVC ProHD Log and Transfer Plugin Version 1.0.1, 720p SP clip recorded by JVC ProHD equipment may not display a thumbnail. To avoid this, please uninstall Sony XDCAM EX Log and Transfer Plugin software by following procedure.

Hello,
I’m shooting QT format in 1920/601 (HQ) recording mode. Before I loaded the JVC codec into FCP 6.0.6 clips would appear with a wide grey bar across the middle and thin grey veritical lines along the sides of the clip. The JVC codec fixed the problem within FCP but when I try to export the FCP clips to a QT movie on my desktop to view rough edits, log interviews, etc. the same horizontal and vertical lines appear (audio is fine). Can anyone shed light on a fix? Thanks in advance.

hello,
i just bought the jvc hm-100 and i’m shooting drop frame, 720/30p, and using .mov, for editing i am using fcp version 6.06. when i open a clip in quicktime, pan shots have a definite stutter though out the pan. but when i drag the clip folder into fcp the browser, everything plays back fine. if i create a quicktime conversion movie of the same clips from fcp and play back that quicktime file, i still get the stuttering.

what is a better file to shoot and work with? the .mov or the mp4 that will give clean, smooth images? if i change to record mp4 and use the transfer tool will i get a better product?
