Use MPEG Streamclip. Save the encoded files to a DIFFERENT drive from the source files.
Make sure your settings are correct. DV is 720 x 480 and so should your MPEGs. MPEG Streamclip can do short segments using the in and out feature and it can batch. Do a test on short clips and once you have your settings tweaked and saved, run the batch.
And promise that before you record another 100 hours of anything you talk to some video professional about workflow. We will provide useful suggestions!

Honestly, with the various codecs and PC setups, trial and error is your friend here. Do a short clip with a decent amount of gray to black and do some tests with gamma and brighness/contrast.
It’s your best bet.

I would say that if it is on your YouTube channel then you can tag it so people can now how to find your other stuff. Keep very simple and short.
I don’t see why clients would mind if it is on your channel, and not on the version you gave them on a DVD. It’s more of a callout to your channel than taking away anything from the video.

On track with Walter, you will probably need an accounting software eventually anyway so that’s where you will find templates. Also if you use Filemaker Pro you can purchase template files for accounting and invoice templates.
We use Sage Software’s Peachtree and I build my invoice templates there.

Hey Kris. With $20,000 per month in receivables and not much overhead, that’s a pretty good take ant the end of the day. I also like the closer-to-home studio space. Mine is about 1.27 minutes from my house with no traffic. It’s great. We are actually looking at renting just a simple warehouse space for a studio which would be separate from my editing space. Seems the two are so different it’s hard to find space that meets both needs.
Working from home is appealing still to me, and I worked from my home for about 4 years before moving into these offices. Still don’t think I could go back.
Finally, ask your clients. As we explored studio space I sent out an email to see what interest there was and got great input. These boards are a good place to start, but by asking clients you trust and have good relations with, it lets them know you value their opinion and want to keep them in the loop with your plans. We don’t have as much context as they will have.

Good suggestions Gerry, however…like I said, we have 10 tapes of interviews and broll. One shoot was done with an EX1 just to record a presentation which will be used for Broll only. We transferred everything to FCP and it comes in as 23.98 XDCAM 1080 clips.
The issue is that all the tape material will be edited in a 720p60 timeline at 59.94 and the 23.98 in its data form will not mix well in FCP. BUT, if I output a tape I kill two birds…the client will have a matching tape to go with the rest for their project archive. We will now have the tape in the project instead of a random folder full of clips.
Seems to me that in all the years past that we trusted tape we only had one copy and no one thought twice about it. Sure we might have made dubs, but only sometimes and mostly for offline/online.
Tape can be trusted. I already have the footage strung out on a timeline….why not just string it out to a tape and be done with it? All the other tapes are no worse off and they don’t have any EX1 media to worry about.
I’m trying to get you tapeless guys to admit that having footage on a tape source is WAY safer than any current storage media and that once on tape you can rest easy. But also, in this case, everything else is on tape, so why not just output to tape and be done with it?

Oops..thanks Michael. Not what I was asking. I was just presenting a circumstance in which I wondered if deleting the original files was acceptable IF I made a tape output to match the rest of the projects elements. It is normally shunned upon to delete source media from tapeless cameras.
BUT, if I only have one shoot that is tapeless, AND if I can make a tape to go with the rest, THEN is it ok to delete the source footage?
Thoughts?

One place we use to do research is BH Photo because their information about cameras is second to none. We also search these forums because there is a to of real world advice on these boards as well. Try doing a simple search or peruse thru the threads and see if you don’t come up with a few more pre-purchase questions after you have your head around some camera contenters.

If anything Episode let’s me do a lot more on my system. Not sure about hogging my computer…I regularly do up to 5 or six tasks at once on my computer and several projects might be encoding at the same time. I do have a multi-core machine however.
