Interesting. Saw a Best Buy ad a week ago for their Insignia line of Blu Ray players for $149. The problem I see is still cost of movie discs. In general the Blu Ray format seems to surpass DVD in every respect…there is just more to offer. But they seemed to have built in a lot of goodies with expectations that they would make back their R&D dollars with licensing fees.
I own a Blu Ray player and have yet to buy a Blu Ray disc. I use it to QC Blu Ray discs we author, mostly looping discs for trade shows. It also looks great playing back our latest HD material in the conference room!
I’m sort of rooting for it on the sidelines and won’t be holding my breath for Apple to install drives in our computers.

I never save an alpha with a PNG file when you save for Web and choose PNG 24.
I just wrote this update to my workflow at my blog found at https://www.tiltmedia.com
I used to do the Pict file with alpha and saved alpha into the alpha channel blah blah blah.
Now it’s PNG 24s for me. But not sure what was the issue with your file.

I’ve been doing it like Alexandra since FCP version 4.5….I think I still have 4.5 on one of my G4s coexisting with FCP 6.
Rename the Pro apps including DVD SP, Compressor, Motion and FCP to their current version and install. Delete prefs and run Disk Warrior on the boot drive after….repair permissions and all those normal maintenance tasks.
Of course Carbon Copy clone first.
I am surely not going to do a clean install and start a drive from scratch. I’ll let you know how it goes. If it goes well I saved about 6 hours or more compared to the “blank it and start over” crowd.

I didn’t want to throw in another manufacturer, but we do actually use the Maxell RPW for our master discs. Verbatim is for copies.
RPW is just a tad more than verbatim but peace of mind is everything!

The US government chose high bitrate MPEG-2 to archive it’s digital media files. Not that it is fully cross platform, but it is a format that is becoming sort of universal.

Our standard encode is 6.2 mbps out of compressor, constant bitrate. And when Craig suggests Verbatim media, don’t assume that Verbatim media at your local office supply store is good enough. I’ve been told that media at mot retail stores is branded and is manufactured in China. The “good” stuff is unbranded and spindled manufactured in Japanese factories.
We use spindled Verbatim, stick to 6.2 CBR, ALWAYS make AC3 audio and burn the Master at 2x speed. Our duplicators burn at 4x speed from a hard drive to 8x media.
Never had a glitch, but have seen a few bad discs along the way.

On a Mac iBiz is a solid performer. Use it every day. We have it networked so all the editors log hours there. Again, on the Mac it can’t be beat for ease of setup and use and cost.
