  • UPGRADE BEWARE FCP7 display bug

Posted by Nate Hubbard on August 13, 2009 at 8:07 pm

    Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2 Apple 23 Cinema Displays.

After upgrading to fcp7, I used Log & Transfer to ingest AVCHD to Prores422 from my Canon HG10

After finishing, I tried to open clips. Both Viewer and Canvas were totally white. When I dropped the clip in the Viewer, a psychedelic frame of the image briefly displayed and then the screen returned to white. When I added to Canvas, same thing happened. Audio from clip played fine and I could play the clip from the finder.

I opened up other projects with same workflow, same problem. Other projects with DV I opened, some of the media played and some didn’t.

I called Apple and they verified the bug. Their first suggestion was to Close FCP, open Displays in Preferences and change Millions of Colors to Thousands of Colors and back again to Millions, oppen FCP and see if it helped. In my case it didn’t.

I was given a Incident # with a promise of a return call within 48 hours. When I told them I was considering retoring to pre-upgrade wit Time Machine, they said it wouldn’t work and was not menant for ProApps.

Don’t upgrade. Do a full erase of the hard drive, clean install of the OS, then install FCS 3. Sure, this will eat up a day…Otherwise you will spend many MORE days chasing bugs.

Absolutely 100% best advice. It’s what we’re doing here. I have a blank hard drive inside my Mac Pro and I’m starting from scratch there.

The only downside to this issue is the stupid Adobe Activation procedure which requires me to de-Activate the software on the original hard drive so I can activate it in the new install. Pain in the — but it’s the best way to do this.

You’re living in the past Nate. You can do clean installations from an upgrade package, you just need your serial numbers form your original FCP disk.

The upgrade disk IS a FULL INSTALL. The difference between it and the full version is that the upgrade asks for a previous version serial number. That’s all. You can install the full version from those disks..

Maybe I’m late to the party on this but I’m shocked to read this advice. I believe it, of course, coming from Shane and Walter. But it seems like a terrible indictment of Apple.

My main editing computer is purely for editing. But it is, nevertheless, stocked full of other apps, drivers, etc. other than FCP. Doing a complete drive erase, OS install and then FCP install is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a huge amount of work entailed in rebuilding a system drive, beyond just those three steps, as we all know.

So why is this necessary??!! Is it actually true that Apple has created an upgrade to the software that we all use with the expectation that all of us will willingly erase and rebuild our hard drives because they decided to code their upgrade this way?

How high-and-mighty is THAT?! It looks like Apple is no longer the woman throwing the hammer; they’re the guy on the screen.

You INSTALL the UPGRADE copy of FCP.

It will ASK you for the OLD SERIAL NUMBER which you will TYPE IN.

    The installation continues.

Nobody said it was NECESSARY. It’s just a good idea. You’re absolutely right, it’s an involved process. That doesn’t make it any less of a good idea.

In my upgrade, I was only asked for the serial number of the upgrade and NOT past licenses as I had in the past. It was kind of a surprise. Have both of you done the upgrade. I forgot to post that the upgrade had worked fine on my Mac Book Pro. II upgraded a week ago and did a bunch of testing. That’s why I was confident to do it to my tower…..
