There is a second best way to do this…but not as good as a clean install. https://www.digitalrebellion.com has a “FCS UNINSTALLER” that will uninstall the FCS components, then you can install the new version. By second best I mean that there might be other things that can cause issues too, other applications or the fact that the drive has fragmented data all over it. Fresh installs are always the best.

Yes, I too have all those small side applications, MPEG STREAMCLIP, FX Factory, P2CMS, Shotput Pro, HD Log, Adobe CS4…and a few dozen others. And it takes a while to get them all back…but I also tend to make sure that I have the newest versions of all of them when I reinstall, so that ends up being better.

That is just the best way to ensure that you have a good, solid working machine. And in my business, a good, solid working machine is a must.

Another thing that you could do that saves asses, is to CLONE your hard drive before you do any uninstalling and installing. Carbon Copy Cloner is free…just clone to another drive, then do the uninstall with Digital Rebellion, or try the upgrade. And if it doesn’t work, clone the drive back. Takes very little time.

But every professional environment I have ever worked in has always wiped the drive and reinstalled the software. Well, except for Avid lately, they have a great uninstaller. So trying the Digital Rebellion one might be worth a…uh…try.

I would do it their way. Or at the very least, use Digital Rebellions FCS remover to first remove Final Cut Studio and then install FCS fresh. This what I’ll do until Snow Leopard comes out. Once Snow Leopard comes out I’ll definitely re-install the entire OS fresh.

Believe it or not, trashing prefs solved it. This was in the documentation from the FCP link on the end of my original post

Delete the User Preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Final Cut Pro back to its original settings. This will not impact your project files, but you should verify your Scratch Disk location setting after doing this. To reset your Final Cut Pro user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the “com.apple.finalcutpro.plist” file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the “Final Cut Pro User Data” folder from the Preferences folder.

The more technology advances, the more complex it gets, and the more issues can arise. The Model T Ford was a simple car…not much to it, not much to fix. But the Space Shuttle…SO MUCH in that that any number of things can go wrong.

Now that the pdf (thanks) issue has been resolved. I have to say the ‘start from scratch upgrade’ advice has me leaning towards not upgrading. If FCS was the only ap on my system drive it would be NBD, but who is in that situation?. Then when Snow comes out, just do it all over again. Money and time wasted vs what workflow improvements you get. The workflow improvements probably win in the end, but still annoying.
I have to agree that this is an issue that Apple should address, and seems very ‘windows 95-esque’. I would gladly pay an additional 100 bucks for the upgrade to have this resolved.

Some of you have brought up a great points about formatting and reinstall. It’s a great idea. You’re right about it being a gigantic PITA

It would be even better if APPLE OSX had a way to store all your licenses for your apps in a file that you could automatically execute when you needed to reinstall all your app after a format.

I’d even pay for an application like that!!!

I went with a half-way house that is slightly less dangerous than doing a straight upgrade:

Before upgrading in place, I renamed ‘Final Cut Pro’ to ‘Final Cut Pro 6.0.6’

No permissions fix (!) I ran the upgrade. It installed everything. Didn’t touch 6.0.6.

In 7 all was fine for a few days. Motion templates appeared as white on white within 7. Then an existing project became damaged. Then most files had the white screen problem.

I repaired disk permissions. All has been fine with 7 since. I haven’t had a look at master templates, because I think that might set off the bug again.

However, I haven’t been doing real work in 7. I’ve been doing paid work on 6.0.6 – with no problems at all. I’ve heard that Compressor frame controls are screwed up, but I’m using MPEG Streamclip for more advanced stuff.

When doing FxScript plugin development, I’ve been switching back and forward between 6.0.6 and 7. As both apps share the same Plugins folder, that hasn’t been a problem. The only delay has been an RT Extreme profiling each time I switch versions.

If you did not do a wipe or full uninstall your receipts for earlier versions are probably still in the system library.
