Also if I saw it correctly the 15 inch comes with 3 gigahertz processors but the 17″ has only one option. Hard drive and video card options and Max RAM are the same between 15 and 17 so in fact the 15″ can have an edge with processing.
I think it’s nuts they don’t offer the Express card on the 15″ model.
I would have to buy a new bag for the 17″.

MPEG Streamclip is your friend here. Should not be a problem converting this. I agree, either pro rez or DVCPro50, and upconvert the audio sample rate from 44k to 48k PCM and you’re good to go.

Whassssup? Where is all the fine COW reporting from the NAB show? What’s the buzz? Everyone touted the 3D technologies and other than the Sony and Panasonic prototypes there doesn’t seem to be any big news from the big chip interchangeable lens front. Oh, and a brief moment on the CAT DV product.

Good media is usually the unbranded and spindled media purchased from dealers. Media found in local office supply stores is usually lower quality stock made in lesser factories.
I buy only Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R media.
Yes, Blu Ray is slow. But you have to account for the fact that DVD can burn at up to 8x (I only burn at 4x or less) and Blu Ray burns at 2x but has about 5 times the data on a full disc).

I have the Lacie via USB and do it all the time. The USB bus speed is not a problem with the burning speed and data throughput during a burn.

We had a chance to look at the Red color corrector and the interface was surprisingly easy to get to know. And we were cranking out significant color correction in no time….renders took a while, but that was Red footage! Wish Color had more of that or the Magic Bullet Looks interface. Just seems more intuitive.
Curious about CS5….I have not been mush of a “CS” fan since CS2. We are at 5 already?
I just saw “Teach your Dragon” in Imax and noticed the Avid credit at the end. I cut my teeth on an Avid an honestly miss working on a truly Pro app. Final Cut is fine and works well-ish, but Pro is not really fully functional yet! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan. Built my business around it. Just surprises me sometimes that it is a “Pro” app and seemingly overlooks some of the basics of what we use it to do.

Interesting. I would say that basic interview and broll type editing comes in at about 5 minutes of finished edits per day (8 hours). Other types of editing, like step by step procedurals might net more minutes per day.
And high concept TV spots with lots of takes for a :30 spot might take a day or more to cut the 30 seconds.
None of this includes adding in music or doing a full mix. Nor does it include color correction or effects and animation.

We run compressor at 6.3 mbps CBR for pretty much everything. We use Bitvice exclusively for situations where we have to put more than 2 hours of video on a DVD and it needs that extra special handling. But the fact that compressor is a one-stop shop for the MPEG and AC3 is a real timesaver. For most of what we encode it is fine. If you are encoding live bands with lots of swishing lights and movement I can see Bitvice being valuable. For most industrials I think compressor would be enough.
Bit Vice is a capable encoder that could use a workflow and interface upgrade.

You never said what Mac you are on. ProRes does not behave with the non-intel Mac computers.
