Unable to capture ProRes, Uncompressed works fine
Posted by Andrew Dietz on March 31, 2010 at 9:10 pmI am unable to capture ProRes. I am using a 1080i29.97 ProRes HQ easy setup. I used an 8-bit Uncompressed setup, and it captured flawlessly.
When capturing ProRes, it quits after a few seconds. Also, the CPU % jumps to about 270%. I know ProRes takes some processing power, but that seems high.
I tried changing the Kona 3 from slot 2 to slot 3, and took out some Crucial RAM. Same result. I also tried using 64-bit Kona 3 firmware with no luck.
Any help is appreciated!
System specs:
2×2.8Ghz Quad Core (Late 2008)
8GB RAM
Mac OS 10.6.2
FCP 7.0.2

March 31, 2010 at 9:44 pmAlso, it seems 1080psf23.98 ProRes HQ also captures fine. I tried another edit bay with different specs, and it also was not able to capture 1080i 29.97 material without located timecode breaks that didn’t exist.

March 31, 2010 at 9:48 pmHmmmm…. That’s a new one.
Can I ask you something? What’s your originating format and why are you trying to capture to ProRes 422 HQ?
You are aware that ProRes 422 HQ was meant for film resolutions like 2k and 4k work. And, you do know that ProRes 422 is a 10-bit codec, right?
I say this because so many folks out here are using this completely unnecessarily. What ever your original footage is based on, well, you can’t get any better quality than the field tapes or discs. You can’t make DV look like HDCAM and that’s what most folks think they are trying to do when using ProRes 422 HQ.
Just some info for ya!

March 31, 2010 at 9:52 pmWe get requests for ProRes 422 HQ deliverables. I don’t have to capture everything HQ, but it’s just an easy habit for me to get into, and it’s easier when a client wants an HQ file. I have tried capturing regular ProRes also with no luck, so it’s not just HQ that is causing issues.

March 31, 2010 at 9:54 pmI would completely uninstall (use the AJA uninstaller) then reinstall the drivers.

That is strange. We capture to ProRes fairly regularly without issues. I’d say reset your permissions and blow your prefs.

March 31, 2010 at 10:21 pmJeremy – no luck. I tried ProRes LT as well. Same result. It seems FCP is locating timecode breaks that aren’t there.

March 31, 2010 at 11:40 pmYou never said what Mac you are on. ProRes does not behave with the non-intel Mac computers.
What system, what hard drives?

March 31, 2010 at 11:41 pmNever mind…what hard drives are you using for capture. Did the scratch disc setting change?

March 31, 2010 at 11:54 pmTrying to catch up…
Deck = Sony SRW-5800
Drives – doesn’t matter as Uncompressed 8-bit captures correctly. I have tried internal, and external drives capable of 350+ MB/s.It seems this issue only occurs with 10-bit captures. I have tried creating the “DisableAltETTPolling.txt” file. That seemed to sort of help, but it still stops after 1 minute almost every time. I also tried removing RAM to only 2GB, but that didn’t seem to help.
So again, this seems to affect all 10-bit captures only with a 29.97 (59.94) framerate. I’m still researching fixes/workarounds. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll keep trying some more things.
This thread seems like the same issue (from 2007!)
