FCP4 at NAB?
Bits of rumblings on the net about a new version being announced. Has anyone at NAB heard anything?

Wow NAB is on and people are speculating. Common sense tells me that with FCS3 released less than a year ago that FCS4, (I am assuming a typo as FCP4 was released over six years ago), is not going to be released for a while.
Either way we won’t know anything until it is officially announced so patience padawan.

Apple laid off a bunch of their FCP team so one wonders if they are done with improvements, or if it is minimal. The only next step I can think of is to enable FCP for some kind of live facilitation. But I’m not the brains behind any of this.

Yeah, FCS3 just barely came out, and goodness knows that the bugs are still being worked through (FCP 7.0.2. update crippled the app….)
It sure would be nice to get a Color UI facelift, though.

Oops yes typo. I wasn’t having a retro moment. Adoe CS4 Production Suite was released just over a year ago, so it would n’t be unreasonable to expect some new competition.

True, it’s within the range of possibility and corporate logic, but given the release cycle of FCS (12-24 months), it’s unlikely. Again, I’d really like major update to Color.

I moved to FCP from PPro last year because of compatibility with other post houses and because CS4 was pretty bad stability-wise. I’ve been on the beta program with Adobe for years but haven’t participated much this time, but I never heard beta testers rave about any of the CS releases as much as they have with CS5.

Avid got rid of three times the employees that Apple did, and that was a second round of lay-offs. But yet look at all the buzz about Avid at the show.
I don’t think you can read much into 40 guys being let go at Apple, or if that does/doesn’t mean a new version is coming.
We just got a new version less than a year ago, I think that is much more telling.Scott Sheriff

We had a chance to look at the Red color corrector and the interface was surprisingly easy to get to know. And we were cranking out significant color correction in no time….renders took a while, but that was Red footage! Wish Color had more of that or the Magic Bullet Looks interface. Just seems more intuitive.
Curious about CS5….I have not been mush of a “CS” fan since CS2. We are at 5 already?
I just saw “Teach your Dragon” in Imax and noticed the Avid credit at the end. I cut my teeth on an Avid an honestly miss working on a truly Pro app. Final Cut is fine and works well-ish, but Pro is not really fully functional yet! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan. Built my business around it. Just surprises me sometimes that it is a “Pro” app and seemingly overlooks some of the basics of what we use it to do.

Exactly how I felt about Avid when FCP 1.x was released. How could Avid charge 100k for a system without FireWire and only 2:1 compression. FCP sported multiple resolutions, lossless workflow with DVCam, compositing modes, animated text features like keening, AE plugins from BorisFX etc. were compatible for 3D text, you could nest sequences for real just like AE, and more.
But since then Avid addressed their shortcomings and advanced quickly. Nit sure FCP has made as many leaps. The price of Avid dropped severely removing the cut and dry FCP is cheaper aspect of the decision.
FCP is now sort of where Avid was. They’re a standard, but nit because they’re the best, but because there is a large penetration of systems and users. They’re due for a big leap if they want to keep up.

I know how people don’t like rumors but the last one I read seemed right on the money with FCS3 in that it wasn’t a major update. Since FCP has to be re-written in Cocoa 64-bit (Currently Carbon 32) the re-written FCP was too buggy to release last year so they released a minor update or fixes. Apple stopped attending NAB along with all major trade shows including MacWorld, they did this so that they could release products on their own time table. I would suspect that we will see a new version by mid summer.
