As a note I always get better results with the “Best” setting which is a two-pass encode.

I do tend to hover around 1000-1200 kbps on a 640 x 360. A 640 x 480 encode will not be 16×9.

Sometimes I use Quicktime Player to export and encode a file….when you click on the video settings for an H264 encode look in the top right corner and check “Restrict to” and choose around 900kbps or so…adjust until you get the size you want.

You can also adjust the size in the size dialog to just about any 4×3 size….is this a 4×3 encode or 16:9?

I encode Windows Media v9 at 960 x 540 (medium size) at about 2200 kbps and then a 1280 x 720 at about 4200 kbps. I also do an MP4 1280×720 that I call a YouTube encode and it runs at around 6000 kbps.

So far that has been the delivery and no issues. If the 1280 WMV won’t play nice they use the 960. Windows Media is the best format for Powerpoint on a PC and the MP4 can play in PPT or Keyonote on a Mac.

Some clients actually want a full 1920 x 1080 ProRes and I usually send a LT version.

Only other format is when the web person needs a specific frame size.

I have not delivered an MPEG1 or MPEG2 to a client in quite a while.

I use 5DtoRGB but it is slow. Why not just log and transfer?

In Premier 6.0 I get the same pulldown results as FCP (drag 23.976 clip into 29.97 sequence).

Could not figure it out in FCP X…could not find sequence properties, or event or whatever the heck they call it.

Are you guys typically encoding 1920 x 1080 for Vimeo/YouTube or 1280? We are doing a 10,000 mbps 1280 x 720 h264 (sometimes x264) for both YouTube and Vimeo and so far so good.

Most computer monitors out there are not able to display full 1920 x 1080 yet….getting there, but seems overkill for most casual users to need/want more than a nicely encoded (and produced) video in 1280 on a computer.

Thoughts?

Figured as much on both counts…need the plug in for XDCAM in FCPX and there is no timecode reader option (BTW, a professional option) so it is a non-starter.
