Shaving mb’s off video…
I am using Compressor 3.05 to try to get a 1.2 GB .mov video to 100 MB or less. The file is an h264 .mov file about 10 minutes in length.
I have been using the Apple Devices Presets for h.264 for iPod-640×480 and reducing the bitrate as I run tests.
I get the file down to 102 MB and cannot seem to drop it any lower with bitrate settings. Bitrate was 1400kb and reduced it to 102 MB.
I was hoping to keep it @ 640×480 since the 320×240 looks like mud.
Suggestions?

Sometimes I use Quicktime Player to export and encode a file….when you click on the video settings for an H264 encode look in the top right corner and check “Restrict to” and choose around 900kbps or so…adjust until you get the size you want.
You can also adjust the size in the size dialog to just about any 4×3 size….is this a 4×3 encode or 16:9?

16×9…I’ll keep trying. I just got so close with that last setting.
I’ll try going your route one more time.
I have not tried restricting the kbs that far as yet.Thanks for the help.

Consider using custom settings instead of the iPod preset. For example, exporting your 16:9 video as 640×360 requires lower bitrate than 640×480.
A 10-minute 100MB file will have a total data rate of approximately 1300 kbps including audio and overhead. I have been able to get good quality 640×360-30p video with a total bitrate of 1250kbps using the following settings in QuickTime Pro:
– MP4
– H.264
– 640×360
– 24/25/30fps as required
– Baseline profile
– Single pass
– 1080 kbps average bitrate
– Auto key frame distance
– AAC audio at 160 kbps (128 kbps should work well, too)
– Streaming enabled if required; file size is smaller when disabledThese settings should work on most mobile devices. Encode a short test file to check, though.

As a note I always get better results with the “Best” setting which is a two-pass encode.
I do tend to hover around 1000-1200 kbps on a 640 x 360. A 640 x 480 encode will not be 16×9.
