You are correct on the easy setup 1080i 29.97 corresponding to the decks setting of 59.94. I would double check your playback settings within Final Cut (also make sure on the RT Extreme tab that you are set for high quality playback and not dynamic). After that, I would double check in the AJA control panel that it isn’t set to down or cross convert.

If that still doesn”t work, I know that with D5, if you have the tape’s write protection set to lock audio tracks 5-8, but you have the deck set to write to 8 audio tracks (even if you are only laying down 4) it will give you tape condition errors. I haven’t worked with HDCAM, so I’m estimating here based on experience with D5.

I’ve had this happen to me before. I’m not sure exactly how it happens, but I would manually reconnect them. If you scroll through your timeline, it’ll show you the offline clip, and funny enough it always showed me the clip name. As long as you don’t change your clip names and they still reflect the name of the media file, you can manually reconnect them. It’s not fun, but that’s what I did.

This definitely sounds like something you would want to do in motion or after effects, and I know I saw a tutorial that showed how to do this with blending modes and displacement maps. Check out Aharon Rabinowitz’s three part podcast series on Displacement Maps in the podcast section.

  • It may not have a capture set up so you’ll have to configure one yourself most likely. I could duplicate an existing preset based on the native resolution of your material, and switch the codec to sheer within that custom capture preset and use that to test it.

I have exported XMLs from Premiere Pro and brought them into Avid Xpress Pro before (albeit I had to recapture, but the cuts where mostly retained) so that might be an option to try with FCP. Can’t guarantee it’ll work, but it’s worth a shot.

Problem solved, I had the D5 tape locked to 4 channels, but the deck was set to 8. Strange how it caused the video signals to be bad, when it would seem like it would just lay off without audio tracks 5 – 8, but it caused all sorts of havoc. It’s always the little things!

No problem. Set your playback to 23.976 do the same in the AJA Control panel, but setting 720 23.976 and under the Codec Tab, set your 24-30 Conversion to 2:3:2:3 and you should be in good shape.

Definitely do it with the Kona. Set your play back within FCP at DVCPRO HD at 60. Then open the AJA Control Panel and click on the Format Tab. If it isn’t already set to 720P, set it to 720P (are you in 60 or 59.94 as that will make a difference, but I would assume most likely 59.94) With that selected, set the Secondary (Converted) Format tab to 525 29.97, and right next to it, where it says Conversion, on the Down pulldown menu, set it to anamorphic. Double check it in your client monitor and you should be good to go. Whenever possible, use your Kona card to up, cross, and down covert as it will do a much better job that within Final Cut itself.

June 13, 2008 at 9:25 pm in reply to: Kona 3 Broadcast safe limiter?

We use the Harris 860 for HD and SD legalization. While I don’t know the exact price, I thought I had overheard a price tag of about $9000. Bob Zelin would probably know if I’m wrong on that one, but it’s a pretty kickin’ legalizer.

June 5, 2008 at 1:05 am in reply to: Can anyone explain this?

I used to have that problem quite a lot on the program that I’m working on here. It drove me crazy, and then I changed the Real-time Audio Mixing (under user preferences) from the default 8 tracks to 14, and I never saw that problem again. That would happen if I had a bunch of SFX stacked on top of each other, especially with audio cross fades. Just like you said, when I would render out the stems to lay to tape, it was full of drop outs. Hope that helps.
