Nope thats how to do it. Shaders should not make any difference.
If its that simple of an animation you can just animate the in side the material. There is a small circle next to all the options (color, alpha gradiant) control click move the time and control click the circle again.

Yes Mocca is the module that covers the character stuff.
In the content browser there are a couple pre-rigged characters you can pose… in those cases just grab the controller and move them to where you want them.
Personally I would learn how to rig. Its is a huge subject when you get in to clusters and morphs but it really has a fast learning curve to start with. Cactus Dan has a couple really great tutorials on c4dportal.com where he teaches the basics…. and from that you should be able to pose anything plus some. He does use his own tools too but you can easly follow along using Mocca.

You can make more segements with the knife tool or go back to your spline and extrude nurbs to do it.

Make your X and make the spline editable. in the attributes change the interpolation to uniform eight should be ok. Then you want to put that into your extrude nurbs. In the tab that has the cap options scroll down and where it says NGON change that to quads. Then place the extrude nurbs in a null with the bend deformer. That should give a clean bend.

Also make sure your antialas is on best.

That text is like 8000 points…that is too much for a boole. It would be different if it was one hole with 8000 points but using this much text will overload most desktops.

You can get this effect with sub poly displacement in the texture.
Or a releif object with a texture of the text. Both of these methods will be easy to process and be just as convincing.

Memory gets sucked up pretty bad with large shadow maps, bitmap textures, displacement, SSS so with out seeing your scene its extremely hard to help.

3d kiwi over at c4dcafe.com created an entire DVD on the subject. I suggest you part with the money and save your self a whole lot of frustration.

You need to enable PLA (point level animation) there is a button to do this beside the time line with a few other that enable key frames. It has a grid of dots on it.

Add a Ppass node and connect that to a Protate node (think thats what its called) then you will get a nice roll after contact with the deflector you can also connect a scale node and what ever else you want to the Ppass node.

I dont think your going to get simpler way unless you go with the explode deformer.
I would suggest in the extrude nurbs to use a quad grid for the caps instead of the default Ngons.
