My goal is to to do simple posing, simple animation, pose presets, … the same stuff as Poser.

I’m seeing two types of setups.
1 – Like the Primitive/Figure (editable), made up if body parts and IK tags.
    2 – A Single poly-cage with bone deformers.

Which direction should I take. Does it even matter?

I’m pretty sure I want to use IK??? I’m just trying to create simple illustrations of a single figure exercising, or two figures for boxing or kung fu or something.

In the end, I want to have pose presets.
Is MOCCA what I need to start looking into?

Obvoiusly, I barely know what I’m talking about 🙂
    I just need some direction.

Yes Mocca is the module that covers the character stuff.
In the content browser there are a couple pre-rigged characters you can pose… in those cases just grab the controller and move them to where you want them.
Personally I would learn how to rig. Its is a huge subject when you get in to clusters and morphs but it really has a fast learning curve to start with. Cactus Dan has a couple really great tutorials on c4dportal.com where he teaches the basics…. and from that you should be able to pose anything plus some. He does use his own tools too but you can easly follow along using Mocca.

Also, in case you’re not aware of it, there’s a plugin called Interposer that duplicates most of Poser’s functions inside of Cinema, using poser content. Might be the way to go if you’re not up for rigging.

If you do decide to pass on Poser altogether, where do you intend to get your figures? Buy them? Model them yourself? FYI, without Interposer, Poser figures are very hard to work with inside of Cinema (or any general-purpose 3D app. for that matter).

    Thanks Randy and Adam.
I’ll be making my own models, I have a few already.
I just see so many different approaches to character animation that I lose focus on what I’m trying to do.

I will definitely try interposer to move some existing work into the C4D workflow.
Looks like there are plenty of tut’s to run through at c4dportal.
    Let the games begin!

    Thanks guys
