I would go with Roll It too but I am not sure that roll it works with all versions of c4d.
So this tutorial can help you if roll it wont.

Your texture path is wrong when you paste.
*You can reload the bitmap (tga) after you copy and paste.
*Or you can Merge the project file rather than copy and paste.
*Or Save the first model as SAVE PROJECT (this compiles all the textures) then save the new project in the same root so the texture path is the same.

What kind of distortion are you looking for? how much?
Sometimes modeling a lens with a transparent material and refraction placed in front of the camera can get a good look… however that would be pretty tough to match in compositing.

put a compositing tag on the original and select force anti aliasing and up it a little like 2*2 by 4*4 or what ever works for your scene.

I have used Render King a few times. You have to buy a time slot so if you are rendering alot at one time its great. We used it since you get full control over your render since it is using net render with his processors. I ended up rendering the different variations of the our clips just because I could that really paid off in the end.

    Yes GI.
    Yes AO as well.
One sky at a time but do two multi-pass renders and Mix them to your liking in Photoshop.

I like a well selected HDR on a sky object to add extra highlights and reflections.
