Okay so I searched briefly, but I think what I am looking for is sooooo basic I can’t find the answer.

So I have a model of a building with Texture TGA files linked to materials (color>texture). I save that as a .c4d file. When I close and open it, everything is still linked and renders fine. However when I file>new and try to copy and paste this building or use the file>merge function, it gives me the error when I go to render.

What’s the simple way to combine models?

Your texture path is wrong when you paste.
*You can reload the bitmap (tga) after you copy and paste.
*Or you can Merge the project file rather than copy and paste.
*Or Save the first model as SAVE PROJECT (this compiles all the textures) then save the new project in the same root so the texture path is the same.

Right, it all comes down to how created the texture in the first place. When you add a bitmap Cinema asks you if you would like to copy it to the scene’s location. If you answer “yes”, you create a relative texture path. Cinema will look in the scene directory to find the bitmap and if it’s not there it will return an error. This is the best method to use if you’ll be using the scene on other computers of NET.

If, OTOH, you answer “no”, Cinema creates a direct link to the bitmap on your hard drive. You can use the texture in other scenes and Cinema will be able to find it — *provided* that you’re working on the same computer and the bitmap is still present in the same directory.

As Randy said, you can convert your direct links to relative links by using the Save Project command, which copies all of your direct-link bitmaps to the project>textures directory and by removing the link to a specific file location.
