Use Episode for transcoding. Probably the special codec of the mpeg you want to encode is not within the programs you use.

November 2, 2013 at 2:22 pm in reply to: FCP7 conversion to something that will work on PC

It depends on the software on a windows based PC.
Nearly every PC has got a windows media player. Best format is WMV. If the PC has got a Quicktime player it will play quicktimes. The safest format is WMV 4:3 letterboxed. If the media player is an actual version it will also play H264(Mpeg4).
By the way, we do all transcodings with Episode,

You have to change the canvas settings,
then click on the picture and you can move it like the text box

We’ve got two samsung 27” Monitors,

if you calibrate them properly they are great (recalibration after 6 months). One of the best displays are Eizo displays (expensive but very good), especially for grafics. It depends on the use of the computer monitor. For editing we use a class1 control monitor, so the computer side is not that important for us.

    This is Snow Leopard (10.6.8),

it is the best OSX for FCP to me. Its running flawless on our editing systems – no problem. I wonder, whether your system causes problems.
Did you run all updates for 10.6.8 ? (I recommend that)
    Then repair permissions
    then trash FCP Preferences
    then restart your computer,

normally this should resolve your problem.
A very good software is digital rebellion, worth every cent,

  • A normal SD DVD is always 720×576 in Pal or equivalent to NTSC.
So you do your ProRes file in FCP, then make a ProRes file of the finished piece. This piece you send to compressor or DVD Studio with the specs of the DVD and then you have got your file. Make shure you get a data rate around 6 MB/s,

    Hi Michael,

what breakout box do you use?
Settings depend on your FCP settings. If you use SD, you set your settings in SD with HDMI, if you use HD you use your timeline settings in HD, for example interlaced, progressive, etc. I would go for 8 bit, but this depends on your breakout box and your monitor.

What do you mean HDMI output – it depends on your monitoring system. We work with Aja kona LHI and 3G and the HDMI output is flawless. If you have got a HDMI output with your breakout box then it is fine.

  • good choice Joseph,

but there are also other good brands around, G-tech is a no go to me. But you can also go for Dulce, Small Tree, Axus, active storage and I think some of the Proavio stuff is nice as well. Jon Shilling is doing a good job in this forum,

    cheers
