Hi symonprod.
First I would recommend you to use Compressor, instead of DVDST, for the MPG2 encodding. In Compressor you got much more control over the process.
About the codecs, there are some knowns issues with third-part codecs (this is not your case cause your using DV), but also about sizes. This in Compressor. I guess in DVDST you can have much more of these incompatibilities.
But I think the problem here is in FC, that output an HDV file, instead of a DV.
How did you captured your footage, and with wich parameters? Which size is the file that you output from FC?

Hi Luke,
I do as you say. I oppen a BM10B Uncompress, Upper-First sequence in FC. I drag a DV clip. Automaticly FC sets the”Shift-fields” effect. If I just render like that, the film is rendered in the wrong order and watch it is a headache.
if I simply uncheck the filter, the result is optimum. This is contradictory with what the article about DV says. I have a JVC monnitor, and work with FC 5.0.4.
Thanks,

If you want the best of Compressor, give the best to Compressor. Although I work with an small DVCam, I output a 10bits Uncompress master-film, that keeps and shows all the god things that I (try) make to my footage amd all the richness of the graphics that I made in AE or so. Your DVDs will really apreciate it.

Hi Terry,
If you are working for the web, in the momment that you reduce the size of your film, and you make it smaller than 360×288 (or so, I do not remember exactly) QT de-interlace by it self because QT it doesn’t support interlaced images of such a small size.
But if tou want to control the quality you better do it your self before. In FC if you want a de-interlaced film, you must imput progresive footage, or you have to de-interlace the one that is interlaced. This in the time-line, with a de-interlacing plugin (but try a good one).
When you export you can do it as progresive (in the sequence settings) or you can export as interlaced. Whatever system you use you will get the same result, because although the second way will give you an interlaced film, the motion difference between the two fields has been eliminated when you apply the ‘de-interlacing” effect.
Wish this can hel you.

PD: Try don’t to use QT Conversion for exporting. -
Hi DopeElf,
BM handel properly the field domminance. However, FC try to do the same and when you lie Lower-first footage in a Upper-first time-line, or viceversa, FC sets the “Shift-fields” effect to the footage. Just uncheck the effect and the rendered film will look perfect.

Hi malcolmland,
To move and resize JPEGS I think FC is not the best tool. Just because what you say, some times look really good, some times horrible. I do it in AE.
About the jumps in the dissolves, try if there is any difference when rendering in RGB or YUV. When your rendering in YUV and you set an effect or transition that has to be rendered in RGB, some times there is a big jump in the levels.
My only advice is not to use the de-interlacing. As long as your working with JPEGS, there is nothing to deinterlace. In the best case you are just wasting time with a longer rendering. In the worst case I think this could be degrading a lot the quality of your pictures, a long as in any de-interlacing the half of the information is generated, with better or worst fortune, by the computer.

What about the maintenance of your system? permissions, caches, etc? Whenever FC start to slow or making funny things I do dat before passing Diskwarrior or Techtools. If things do not get better, I open a new FC project and I drag and drop everything from the brownser of the original project. As the last solution I trash the preferences (no funny to do it in the middle of a project). Before I kill my self, if that doesn’ works, I re-install FC.

September 10, 2006 at 1:28 pm in reply to: Syncing dailies in FCP – confused about the prosess!Hi Sralar,
You can do it. You can make sub-clips, master clips, indepenient clips, etc. But if I try to explain it to you, you will get more confused. There is a very good article in the LA FCUser group web site. “Meet the Family: FCP 4’s Clip Types” is the name. I thing didn’t change much since FC4.

September 9, 2006 at 11:07 am in reply to: Exporting Help – FCP HDV Project to SD Quicktime IssuesHi Greg,
When you lay Lower-First footage in an Upper-First time-line (or vceversa) FC automatically aplie a “Shift-fields” effect in the layed clips. This should be fine bat not allways it is. I just installed a Black Magic card, and the card deal with the shifting by its self, so to get the correct interlacing, I must take out the “Shift-fields” that FC sets.
You should also have a look in the brownser to see if FC has recognized properly the field dominnance of the footage that you have imported.
Is the only tip I can give you.

Hi Brian,
I’m still with FC5.0.4, but I think that if you have not MPG2 export option is because you have to update something else. If you had before MPG2 export option is because you had installed DVDSTpro or the QTMPG2Export componnet. As long as I know, FC doesn’t include the componnet.
