Hy Robin,
I’m using a Black Magic for monitoring. I plug it though SD or components, but I could connect it through composite as well. If your monitor has composite video-in, you have not problem. Just choose the correct card.

Hy Troy,
There is an “Easy set-up” in Final Cut calls “DV50”. In the specs says that the codec used is simply DVCPro50. QuickTime should not have any problem to read it.

When you import your footage to FC (FC dosn’t knows it’s 16×9), in the brownser you must check it as 16×9. You do it in the column “Annamorphic’. Then you can drag it to a 16×9 sequence, where you will get a full 16×9 screen, or to a4x3 sequence, where you will get a 16×9 image on top of the 4×3 screen (same if you would crop a 4×3 image).
Then when you export with Compressor you have to specify the kind of MPG2 (16×9 or 4×3), depending of the option you have choosen when setting your sequence in FC.
The only problem of making a 16×9 DVD, is that some old DVD players can not read them as 16×9, so the film is displayed as 4×3 (deformmed). If you use the second option, everybody will see a 16×9 image, although been 4×3.

Hi George,
The official UER bars (PAL) are 75% level and 100% saturation, except the white one that is 100% (luminance=1, saturation=0 ).
If the bars would be 100%, they would be simply “ilegal”.
The SMTP bars (NTSC) are the same than the UER, but the white (gray) is 75% luma.
When you use the bars you have to see that they reach the small boxes in the vectorscope, without over
passing (sorry by my English).

Is just a an idea, but why don’t you try directly from the DVD driver. With MPEG Streamclip you can convert from the files on the disc direct to 10Bits UC or whatever. And you can mark in and out points.

Yes that the truth. The chroma filtering improves the quality. I just meant that is more practical capturing DV. You get the same quality when rendering 10 bits UC. You keep your hard-drive light and, the most important, your footage keeps the original TC.

I think that if you are capturing MiniDV or DVCam through the Firewire the only think you will get is a very big file for the same footage.
DV is already compressed and the only think you going to do is to write the same luma and chroma information in 422 instead of 411 or 420. I think the results will be the same, if the MB card do it during capturing or its do it after through Premier o FC.
I work with a SONY PD-170 and WHEN YOU REALLY SEE THE QUALITY is when I capture directly from the video output (composite) of the camera.
When I try chroma-key for example instead of recording in tape a DV signal and capture it through Firewire, I record directly in the computer through the BM. I record he video out because is the best signal you can get from your camera (the S-video would be better because is components, but I don’t know how to branch it to the BM). The same signal you are recording but prior to be compressed. A real Broadcast video signal. BM make a wonderful job filtering the components and and YOU CAN NOT BELIVE THAT THE IMAGE COME FROM YOUR OWN CAMERA.
So as I tell you, to download DV footage you better do it through Firewire and upgrade later if you need. There is not technical reason to get any improvement and the size of the files there are 8 folds bigger.
Just to add that I’m very happy with my BM (and the Pro monitor that I’ve plugged).
