What kind of files are you getting from the screen-capture software?
If you want to export something from FC without compressing again, you must set a sequence with the same codec and parameters than your footage. If there is any change, FC have to render to convert the clips to the new settins.

I film with a DVCam and edit in DV, but when ever I have to render I go to a higher codec. I only export to DV rushes that they have not been touched. For example to print back to tape some pics. But try never back to DV. Even to make a DVD y do it from a 8 or 10b Unc depending of what I’ve put and I’ve done in the time-line.

Hi luke,
Its seems that the PAL are like a kind of “seccond class people. Our PAL DV is “less broadcast” (about the Chroma Sampling method) than the NTSC-DVCPro. And we’ve got the issue of the fields order.
I learnt the PAL and the NTSC more than twenty years ago (thanks God they didn’t change), and I can understand the reasons of what I call “less broadcast” (That doesn’t mean worst).
But for the matter of the difference in the field order in some PAL codecs, I can not find any technicall reason. Its sounds, for me, just like a trick of the manufacturers to make difficult the use of DV for more proffesional purposes.
Do you know where I can any information about?

If your film is only 20 minutes, and your DVD its got only one audio, you don’t need to use ACC (A.Pack). Keep it AIFF. The difference of quality is huge.

Yes Steve, i think Apple has had a very good vision. Good software and affordable. The best policy for selling computers.
You talk about piracy, but some times..i bouth two years ago Combustion3. The price in the USA was around 900 US$. the price in Europe was 1200 Euros. something like a 50% more expensive. And in the States they give you for free the “Automatick Duck” plugin (no less than 300U$). There are things that some time push you to grab the black flag with the scull. A couple of month after, they offer me a coppy for around 6 bucks.
1000 US is the price of a dinner with wine in some restaurants but in the country I’m living that represents the ANNUAL AVERAGE WAGES. Just to get back you investment in software you must to work like a good dog.
You talk aswell about updating software through internet. The system is great, but not everywhere you can allow yourself to download 60Mb update without a cut in the connexion. A couple of years ago to update my G5, i had to pick my lap-top, cross the border of this country (this is not a joke), go to an Internet-cafe and download the updates. Then back at home to update the Big Mac.
anyway, as your self, I reccommend to register the software.

Hi Mark,
“None’ is something completely differen fron “Uncompress 10/8 bits”. If I’m not wrong, NONE is a 444 RGB format codec, when the 8/10b Uncomp are 422.
Out of that, if you can import the NONE files to FC, why don’t you just lie them in a 8/10B Unc sequence?
Or eddit in a NONE sequence (to have RT preview) and chage the settings of your sequence to 8/10B Unc right before rendering?

Hi,
i can not help you about the MTV filter, but about to select a colour from an image, you can do it with the two Colour Correction filters of FC, with the “Limit Effect” . There is a good toutorial by Andrew Balis in Ken Stone’s web site. Read about “Secondary color Correction”.

Yes jubal. and there is system that you don’t have to make even a single click. In the top of the Canvas and the Viewer windws, there are three little buttons. Click the one in the middle.
You will read:
– Sync off
– Open
– Gang.
Select Open. Now with the Up and Down arrows you can go jumping in the time-line from clip to clip. They get open in the Canvas and also in the Veiwer. You just have to let selected the effects tab in the Viewer and the effects are ready for you. What you make in the effects tab will show-up in the canvas.
But if what you want is to have the effects tab permanently separated from the Viewer window, I think is not possible. Whenever you go to a new clip, the effects window go back to the original possition.

Yes Tim, avoid to go to DV. Output DV only if youare laying DV clips that don’t have to be rendered, so your images are not recompressed. In the moment you have to render try to export with a higher “integrity” codec.Try to feed Compressor with the best stuff that you can. I film with a DVCam but when I go to export to Compressor, I set my time-line in 10b Uncompress to keep the results of the colour correction and the graphics (normally Animation or so). If you go back to DV your just throving away the most of what you already have got. In your case I would keep all the process in HD.
