MPEG 2 export out of timeline in FCP 5.1?
I just crossgraded my Powermac G5 to FCP 5.1 abd now I do not see MPEG 2 as a choice to export using Quicktime Conversion right out of my timeline (not using Compressor)as it was in the past. Am I missing something or did FCP 5.1 get rid of that option?

Hi Brian,
I’m still with FC5.0.4, but I think that if you have not MPG2 export option is because you have to update something else. If you had before MPG2 export option is because you had installed DVDSTpro or the QTMPG2Export componnet. As long as I know, FC doesn’t include the componnet.

That functionality was removed in v5, if you;’re working with the current version of the OS and QT. It’s no longer part of the QT module and DVDSP does not install it. Basically you have to use compressor.

Its not bad at all Brian, just slightly different from what you’re used to.
Export a reference file, takes me about 5-minutes for an 86-min. 10-bit uncompressed timeline, and then use that file in Compressor to encode to video to MPEG-2 and audio AC3. And, while that’s processing you can keep editing in FCP too. What’s so bad about that?

Yes…do what David suggested…do not use the “export to compressor” command, unless you are unhappy with the results.
Export to Compressor encodes your effects directly to MPEG2, which takes MUCH MUCH longer, but in some circumstances can give you a slightly cleaner encode. It also ties up FCP for the duration of that lenghty encode.
