I figured it out. The deck was set internally to out put 1080 23.98 PsF and not 720p 59.94.
So, although I was able to see the picture via SDI (out of the deck) I final cut pro was looking for a 720p 59.94 signal.Once I reset the deck everything was fine.
By the way, the menu in the Panasonic 1200A deck wins the award for the most counter intuitive unnecessarily complicated electronic device in the history of electronic devices.
In wikipedia there should be a picture of the 1200A deck under ” unintuitive “.

Yes it’s in Remote mode and I have control of the deck through final cut pro. I can see video on my monitor being fed by AJA Kona 3. I just can’t see anything in the log and capture window (they usually play simultaneously)… Instead the log and capture window says “waiting for timecode” and then after a few seconds an error message appears saying “This operation could not be completed as there is no video”.
There is video though??

I’ve got final cut six and, a quad with 4.5 gigs of RAM and an AJA Kona 3 card.
The quad won’t cut it? Must be intel?

One more noob question.I’m trying to figure out how much drive space I’ll need in the AJA data rate calculator.
Under “Compression” there are 3 different kinds of 10 bit. I’m not sure which one is right.
1. 10 bit YUV
2. 10 bit RGBA
3. 10 bit RGBMy video settings are as follows:
1. Presets: (Custom)
2. Frame Size: 1280X720 HD)
3. Frame Rate: 23.98
4. Compression: ( ? ) one of the 3 flavors of 10 bitthanks again.

Yes I do have a Kona 3 card, but I can’t recapture the Varicam footage as it’s just too much! This project is for my reel… so at first it’s going to DVD and internet (I want it to look nice) and then it’ll go to HD-DVD or BlueRay. Honestly though for now all I’m concerned about is the net.
Everything is 23.98.

one last question… is there a way to capture HVX-200 footage to: ProRes422 (HQ) or even (SQ) 1280 x 720.
if so are there similar advantages to Varicam footage captured/sequenced this way? i.e. color grading and small bump in resolution? or is P2 different?

ah. so YUV is about 60 MBps
1280×720 HD 23.98 fps
10 bit YUV = 58.92 MBps
10 bit RGB = 88.39 MBpsQuestion… doesn’t the Varicam always record 60fps (or) 59.94… even when you’re shooting 24 fps. (this is what I’ve always heard)
If so, what about those extra frames? Even if they’re not seen…. are not taking up disk/bandwidth space?
If the extra frames are part of the equation then the data rate would be 220 MBps.
