I’m always getting bits and bytes mixed up.
Ok so I’ve been using both the AJA Kona System test and the AJA Kona calculator.

My disk appears to be writing at 121.1 MB/s and Reading at 151.2 MB/s.
So that’s NOT fast enough for Uncompressed 10-bit RGB 1280 X 720… is it? : (
According to calculator I need 220.96 MBytes/sec

I guess it is fast enough for ProRes 422 HQ though.

This is obviously all contingent if I’m doing the test right within the AJA Kona System Test.

Under “Test”: I have “Disk Read/Write”
Video Frame Size: 1280 X 720 10 bit
I have “disable file system cache” checked
I DO NOT have Simultaneous KONA DMA checked
I chose and 1.0 GB file size.

Could any of my settings be giving me false readings?

So for uncompressed i need a hard drive that’ll maintain speeds of 220 Mbps correct?
I have a 2.5 terabyte hardware raid that can do that… so I should be good.

Just to clarify it would also be more lines of resolution too, right? Full raster (1280×720 as opposed to 960×720 native DVCPro HD).

Yes it does make sense.
Thank you very much. More questions though…

1. So when you capture uncompressed or ProRes you actually get MORE RESOLUTION and MORE COLOR SPACE as well? Correct?

2. If “regular” compressed varicam/hvx is 8 bit 4:2:2 color space then what is the “regular” dvc-pro hd final cut TIMELINE. Is the timeline not 4:2:2 colorspace (non-ProRes that is)??
If so than what’s the point of 4:2:2 color space if it gets put into a lesser timeline.

Looks like I’m going to have to recapture the footage to get what i want.

Which do you think looks better.

or

10bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed DVC-PRO HD

So in other words i have to recapture the footage at ProRes 422 ten bit codec in order to do get the best possible image?

Also, I’m confused… what’s the difference between ProRes 4:2:2 and regular uncompressed 10bit DVC-PRO HD. (Other than ProRes takes up less room?

So there would be no benefit cutting in a ProRes line if I’ve already captured the Varicam footage via firewire. The ProRes benefits are only apparent if i CAPTURE uncompressed to a ProRes timeline? Is this correct? The ProRes compresses the footage 4:2:2 and doesn’t use as much room as an uncompressed timeline.

Does anyone know where i can find an easy to understand explanation for the different types of configurations for raids? I don’t know the difference between RAID 5, 10 and 1 ect…

Yeah I was shocked that they didn’t have ‘standard’ three prong Anton Bauers. I’m sure someone in the UK has them… it’s just that we needed them IMMEDIATELY. We ended up using this big block batteries that were encased in small ‘rock -n- roll’ cases. It was a little comical. Anyway lesson learned. Anything we can afford to double up on we will.
