Thanks for the advice… I got about half way there with the information from Gary Taylor in the DVDSP forum, but this part of my question seems to be pertainent to FCP… so perhaps you could help?
What’s the best way to export our project? Should I export as a Quicktime Movie or export in Quicktime Conversion? We would like to get the most uncompressed version possilbe… I’m just confused as to what the difference is between these two are. Also, Gary mentioned something about an .M2v? I believe when we exported before we ended up with a quicktime file/final cut file (it was a cross between the two). Are we supposed to end up with a .M2v?
I get the feeling that what we’ve been getting out of the FCP4 and DVDSP is not the same stuff that went into the camera (quality wise). I would like to ensure that when capturing there is NO compression and when I’m exporting there is none either… Are there other codecs I should be getting into… perhaps other capture cards? I’m currently using what came stock with my dual 1 gig G4.

I couldn’t agree more- I’ve seen footage shot with the SDX-900, then blown up to HD and then finally projected onto a huge screen (The Dome)… the footage looked GREAT !
So much of it depends on the LIGHTING and the DOP !

Wow that sounds great. What are the advantages to the camera slowing footage down (instead of in post)? Does it look better… even though “better” is relative. Is the standard def resolution the same as the DVX-100 or is it slightly higher? For instance I know that the Canon XL-2 has slightly higher resolution in 16:9 mode.

The P2/HD aspect of this camera is clearly being marketed to people interested in the BIG SCREEN but can’t afford a Varicam or F900. Perhaps independent filmmakers and others who need a fairly high quality image that can be blown up without falling to pieces.
As far as having to offload media from the P2 cards every few minute… WHO CARES !!! When shooting film you’ve got to reload mags every few minutes as well. This new camera is giving you an amazing image with much less compression than an “HDV” camera. Not to mention 24 FPS.
The Z1 is officially an “HDV” camera. The HVX is NOT. Panasonic isn’t even part of the “HDV crew”, they’re doing their own thing… and as far as I’m concerned it’s the ONLY thing going on right now. BRAVO Panasonic!!!!

Panasonic also claims (on another page) that the camera will shoot 1080 Progressive. I’ve seen several different Panasonic pages that differ.
