I’m just at the final stages of finishing this dv project (which is due tomorrow) and I’m getting a weird “digital mess” during the fade ins and outs…all the other footage is fine. It’s as if the fade in’s and outs are pixelated and then all the other footage remains uneffected.

Also, the fade in’s/out’s look fine when I’m viewing the project in FCP4.5. It’s only after burning the project to DVD that I get the digital mess and is being viewed on a TV.

    What could this be?

    Here’s my path.

    1. Shot on Panasonic DVX-100 24P
    2. Imported DV NTSC 48KHZ
    3. Edited
    4. Export>Quicktime Movie >Setting>DV NTSC 48KHZ

Then once the Quicktime/FCP file is done I import into DVD Studio Pro 2 and burn.

Is there something that I’m doing wrong here?

Everything looks fine, but I would export using Compressor so that the video is already encoded when you bring it into DVDSP. If you don’t want to do this, you could tweak your encoding settings in DVDSP. You might want to try the 2-pass VBR setting, but do a search in the DVD Studio Pro forum. That’s really a better place for this question.

Thanks for the advice… I got about half way there with the information from Gary Taylor in the DVDSP forum, but this part of my question seems to be pertainent to FCP… so perhaps you could help?

What’s the best way to export our project? Should I export as a Quicktime Movie or export in Quicktime Conversion? We would like to get the most uncompressed version possilbe… I’m just confused as to what the difference is between these two are. Also, Gary mentioned something about an .M2v? I believe when we exported before we ended up with a quicktime file/final cut file (it was a cross between the two). Are we supposed to end up with a .M2v?

I get the feeling that what we’ve been getting out of the FCP4 and DVDSP is not the same stuff that went into the camera (quality wise). I would like to ensure that when capturing there is NO compression and when I’m exporting there is none either… Are there other codecs I should be getting into… perhaps other capture cards? I’m currently using what came stock with my dual 1 gig G4.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

OK… Understand that for video to go on a DVD it has to be compressed into an MPEG-2 video file and a seperate audio file (.aiff or AC3). So when you export a DV QuickTime movie from FCP, DVDSP then has to turn it into the seperate files, and compress it on the way. This is what Compressor is for. It came with both FCP and DVDSP if you have these programs you have it. From Final Cut, to to Export

    Todd,

Thank you for your detailed answer. We’re in the process of learning this all at once…. baptism by fire I guess.
We’re going to use compressor and I’ll post back with results.

    thank you,

    Michael
