  • Is ProRes HQ a “capturing codec” ?

Posted by Pierre on October 12, 2007 at 4:04 pm

About to capture Varicam footage and would like to capture to best possible codec without capturing truly uncompressed. I just don’t have the hard drive space for it and don’t know if I could tell the difference anyway. I would however like to take advantage of the new ProRes codec.

Can I use the ProRes codec to capture via HD-SDI out of a DVC-PRO HD deck?
I don’t see the ProRes codec as an option in the “log and capture” window under “capture settings tab” .

Does this mean that it’s a codec that I can apply to a sequence AFTER the footage is captured under another codec?

Or am I just looking in the wrong place?
    thanks,
    michael

You need to have FCP 6 to do this, and an Intel Mac.

I’ve got final cut six and, a quad with 4.5 gigs of RAM and an AJA Kona 3 card.

The quad won’t cut it? Must be intel?

To capture PRO Res, your machine MUST be an intel, or you must use some capture device with a hardware ProRes encoder like the AJA I/O HD.

This has been tested and reported on in these forums.

DONT do it. I made this mistake a while back and my Pro Res stuff will not play back properly for some reason- video was jumpy. I ended up having to convert all the stuff to 10-bit uncompressed. I suggest using DVCPRO/HD for now until Apple gets this codec in working order.
-BTW every tech I talked to couldnt figure out my problem.

Since I rented the deck, it was impossible for me to recapture into another codec, and I was stuck.

There is nothing wrong with ProRes.
It works perfectly fine for most people.

I have used ProRes for SD since it came out and I wouldn’t
go back to uncompressed again if I don’t have to.

I can vouch for Shane’s ProRes HD testimony though, although
Apple says a G5 Quad is minimum, it WILL not work
on all of them, because mine consistenly fails
to capture after 5 or 6 seconds. Some have been
able to capture with G5 quads, but I’m not one of them.
