Can only guess, but one thing that does happen sometimes is a temporary break in contact between PC and firewire drive – if the media for a project is on that drive Vegas can freeze. Check F/W plugs at both ends, and whether one could have been accidentally “waggled” causing a loss of contact.
IMO these 4 pin firewire plugs are really not up to the importance of the job they have to do.
Of course, it could also be a dodgy cable.Peter Wright

Chris – from what you discovered, it sounds like my suggestion would have caused the problem if you didn’t already have it! Another item of info to file away somewhere in the grey matter!

I don’t know of a “direct” way – though this would be a very useful function.
An “indirect” way is to zoom out so you can see the whole timeline, then in Project Media Pool, right click and “Select Timeline Events”. If you watch carefully as you do this, your pic will change colour slightly as it is selected.

1. I don’t know where you read that Vegas can’t improve audio – it does this better than any other NLE!Vegas can definitely resample, so set the render properties to the full DVD settings.
2. If you use standard DV settings this will automatically be lower field first, so no need to do anything.

I must admit I didn’t know this function worked with other designated audio editors than Sound Forge, but I just tried it with Cool Edit and the new take arrived fine back on the timeline.
My workflow was Right click > Open Copy in Audio Editor …. made a change in Cool Edit, closed CE and selected “Save”, and Take 2 was there in Vegas.

Sounds strange Chris, especially as you have checked the veg associations.
Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling V5 will help.

Ed, could you clarify something for me.
With my dual monitors, one of my desktop layouts is to have the right hand monitor exclusively for preview, and I’ve used it this way since V4.
What does the additional function in V6 do compared to this?

To go to next/previous cut use ] and [ – I have them as buttons on my Contour Shuttle Pro.

Theoretically yes, lowering the bitrate may reduce quality, but this is likely to be undetectable, especially if 2 pass VBR is used.
Another thing to look at is do you really need that 2 hours – I don’t know what sort of project it is, but maybe a little pruning could make it more watchable 😉
– and, with the advent of 2 layer DVDs this problem will no longer exist.
