Friend had a look at Vegas 5 at my place yesterday. Is currently using Matrox / Premiere package but has gotten sick and tired of the instability. Almost laughed when he said it sometimes goes for up to 6 hrs without a crash – yep, I be smug.

Anyway, he’s thinking of going the FCP / Avid route, since is more commercially viable for employment here in London, blah blah. Still, is interested in Vegas since I’ve been blabbing on about it for ages.

He wanted to know the weaknesses of Vegas vs FCP & Avid. I’m only using Vegas 5, so although I ran a few forum searches, didn’t come up with anything recent.

Anybody care to supply such? or strengths. I told him about the STABILITY and speed of vegas generally, but need more specifics

    TIA

Without claiming to be an exhaustive list (please add yours, folks!) here are some strengths:

Desktop Design – so many functions are there where they should be, not hidden down a tree of menus (e.g. dissolves, opacity,

Ease of use – almost all functions are achieved quicker and previewed instantly.

Built in tool range, including nested projects, compositing, 3D, bezier masks, parent/child ………

Audio tools – simply the best!

    Equipped for HDV

Scripting – some fantastic time saving functions here, and constantly being added to.

The Vegas community – knowledgeable, helpful and generous when it comes to sharing knowledge, scripts and veg files.

    Weaknesses (?)

Still relatively “unknown” in some circles, despite its excellence.

If your friend is used to hardware assistance, Vegas is software only, but, as we’re finding, it gets faster as processors do, whereas hardware cards are “stuck”.

Try adding media, transitions, or making any adjustment to anything in any way on your timeline in any other NLE. Playback is always stopped.

Vegas just keeps playing. Not a big deal? Get used to that and try going back to anything else.

Missing a proper titling plug. Still wish that Title Motion would be compatible with V.

    “Missing a proper titling plug”

I’ve heard this before and it makes no sense to me.
What is wrong with the titling app in vegas?
If you look at most other NLE’s you will find the
titler in vegas is actually quite good and among
    the best.

What Impressed me the most was that you can actually
create a rolling title that runs clear and smooth
on screen. Most NLE’s create jittery un-professional
looking title scrolls and there’s nothing that can
be done about it except for a 3rd party solution
    or using after effects.

    Pros:
    Stable
    Fast
    excellent audio tools
maintains good quality rendering even with DV codec.
    actual timeline scrubbing!

    Cons:
odd way of labeling generated media (no biggie)
can’t move timeline cursor much past last segment. (no biggie)
no image sequence file format export. (finding I can live without it)

I would like to se a “Go To” function. Like “goto” in and “goto” out.
Is there a hidden way of doing this?

What do you mean by “Like “goto” in and “goto” out.“?

I would like this as well, maybe it does already.

goto in meaning if your cursor is over a clip
you go to the head of that clip. goto out = going
to the end of that clip.

on adobe premiere that hotkey was home and end.

on a discreet smoke system its the z and x key
which is defined as next cut previous cut.

To go to next/previous cut use ] and [ – I have them as buttons on my Contour Shuttle Pro.

    – and there is a script for exporting as frame sequence (RenderImageSequence.js)

[Borjis] “goto in meaning if your cursor is over a clip
you go to the head of that clip. goto out = going
to the end of that clip.”

If the event is selected, use 7 and 9 on the numeric key pad. This puts it in trim mode which goes away if you do something else or hit 5.

If the track is selected, Alt/Ctrl/Arrow moves to the event edges.
