You are confusing the DVDA project file (.dar) with the files it prepares. These are two folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS which can be burned onto a disc as data by any other program.
This “lack” doesn’t make DVDA not a good program, it means, as Mike said, that Sony take a while to release drivers for new burners.

One way is to input avi to DVDA and use File > Optimize to let DVDA calculate the bitrate necessary to fit onto disc – this also take account of menus. You can do the same with MPEG2 but this will mean double compression and probable quality hit.
Disadvantage of this way is that no 2 pass VBR available, whereas if you know what bitrate will do the job, Vegas may produce better quality by conseving resources for where there is more motion in frame.
(Don’t know why DVDA3 project takes up more room than DVDA1, but as you say, lots of nice additional features.)

Without claiming to be an exhaustive list (please add yours, folks!) here are some strengths:
Desktop Design – so many functions are there where they should be, not hidden down a tree of menus (e.g. dissolves, opacity,
Ease of use – almost all functions are achieved quicker and previewed instantly.
Built in tool range, including nested projects, compositing, 3D, bezier masks, parent/child ………
Audio tools – simply the best!
Equipped for HDV
Scripting – some fantastic time saving functions here, and constantly being added to.
The Vegas community – knowledgeable, helpful and generous when it comes to sharing knowledge, scripts and veg files.
Weaknesses (?)
Still relatively “unknown” in some circles, despite its excellence.
If your friend is used to hardware assistance, Vegas is software only, but, as we’re finding, it gets faster as processors do, whereas hardware cards are “stuck”.

DVDA has had trouble recognising some burners – make sure you have updated to the latest version.
I remember the first DVDA2 couldn’t find my Lite-On burner, but the first revision corrected this.
If all else fails, use DVDA to prepare the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders then another program such as Nero or Record Now to burn them to disc.

Stay with Photoshop for Stills – I use Paint Shop Pro for this, but the principle’s the same – you can have PS or PSP open alongside Vegas and as soon as you save, the change flows through to the still on your timeline.

… and, with Vegas’s Transition Envelope you can change the speed at which the line is revealed or even pause it whilst you describe a pause in your trip.

This may be one of those situations where a zoom gets near to the edge, and the default smoothness setting of 100% creates an unwanted curve which can take the zoomed frame outside the “main” frame.
The solution is to change the Smoothness setting of each keyframe to 0% so that the zoom moves directly from one keyframe to the next. If the first keyframe is set to 0% before starting, all subsequent keyframes will remain at zero.

Marc,
I’ll be interested to hear Liam’s take on this, but my logic says – yes, the same bitrate will produce the same size (give or take a bit ….) BUT – the 24p should be better quality.

I’ve never had to do this Greg, so I don’t knopw what’s happeniong, but …
I’m not sure whether you have successfully managed to capture any tapes/clips, or whether you’re having troublew with them all. If the recapture line on right click is greyed out, could that be because there’s already a version of the clip in the designated folder?
– you could try moving rather than deleting, so Vegas can’t find them. Failing that, did you refresh the media pool after deleting?
Is the time code on the camera tapes continuous right through? – sometimes multiple zeros can confuse things.
For those clips you have on the capture drive but don’t appear in the project, have you tried the right click > Rep[lace function?
Do you have an alternative tape deck/camera in case the dsr11 is playing up?
May not help, but I can imagine what you’re going through …

I’ve used both without problems. USB2 has a faster max speed but Firewire is better at sustained rates – I’d get a 4 x 6 cable.
