Having trouble recapturing clips on a tightly edited feature movie that I have been working for two years. I am working with Vegas 5

My computer crashed and I am working with a new win xp pro PC system 3gig processer and 1 gig of ram. Using a new lacie external firewire 160gig drive. Deck is the sony dsr11
The back-up edit veg file loaded fine.

    1) Have one tape so far, where three clips out of 60 captured with glitches and slow sound. I repacked the dvcam tape (full size 64’s) and deleted the bad clips on the capture drive. When I right click on the clip, in the media pool, the recapture line will not highlight.
Where do I go from here?

    2) a few times now, during the recapture process, the capture window will freeze and then nothing is added to the media pool for the project. The clips are on the capture drive, how do I get them into the project without erasing and recapturing again?

This is a very difficult edit and would be horrible to start all over.
    thanks, Greg

I’ve never had to do this Greg, so I don’t knopw what’s happeniong, but …

I’m not sure whether you have successfully managed to capture any tapes/clips, or whether you’re having troublew with them all. If the recapture line on right click is greyed out, could that be because there’s already a version of the clip in the designated folder?

    – you could try moving rather than deleting, so Vegas can’t find them. Failing that, did you refresh the media pool after deleting?

Is the time code on the camera tapes continuous right through? – sometimes multiple zeros can confuse things.

For those clips you have on the capture drive but don’t appear in the project, have you tried the right click > Rep[lace function?

Do you have an alternative tape deck/camera in case the dsr11 is playing up?

May not help, but I can imagine what you’re going through …

Did you happen to save your sfvidcap file? If yes, then you can easily use that to recapture the peices. You mention that even in the original VEG file that everything was marked as needing to be recaptured. Can you go back to that original VEG file again?

As for your problems capturing, are you using the same device you originally used for capturing. Do the tapes playback OK in that device?

Thank-you very much for the help.
Knowing that there is not another way to do the re-capture, helps me focus.

I do have the veg file on disk, so all is not lost.
I just did not want to start over with the same problems. I’ve tried this a few times already.

The deck is the same. all but three out of 60 some clips captured and playback fine. (Captured and edited a short show last night without problems.)
Timecode is unbroken and each tape had a different hour.
I restarted the computer a few times and the un-highlighted recapture line is still there. I understand the tape as it seamed to be packed too hard, but can’t get my head around the file not letting me recapture media after it has been deleated.

I restored the problem clips from the recycle bin and redeleted, same thing happens, so this looks like a computer problem.

I’ll clean the deck and try the computer methods you talk about.

I’ll work on this tonight when I get back, in and let you know.
Thanks again to both of you, this forum is a amazing!

You might want to manually batch capture those 3 sections. Then you can replace the original clips with manually captured clips.

How do I manualy capture a clip and replace it with a clip that has already been cut into tiny cuts in the timeline and not lose the edit.
I have 12 X 64min dvcam tapes with 70+ clips per tape , so this could get ugly

Use Advanced Batch Capture to specify the exact same in/out points. Once the new piece is captured, go back to Vegas, find the clip you wish to replace in the Media Pool, right-click it, choose “Replace” and pick the new file you just captured.

Thanks for the help. I’ll put in the time to get my head around the Vegas re-capture. Been using senalizer for everything except
this show, so I have some work to do.
