  • Best Quality for Video & Audio in Vegas6: What Properties?

Posted by Michael Morone on July 12, 2005 at 12:00 am

    I have 2 questions:

1: My goal is to render audio (currently avi) in a Vegas 6 project to a AC-3 file, which I will use to make a DVD. (I also have video to go along with the audio, but my question concerns the audio). I want the audio to be the best possible quality (or as best as possible).

I want to set the Project Properties Audio Tab to the right conditions. I have read that Vegas cannot improve the quality of the audio. So, for example, there is no point in re-sampling the audio to a higher sample rate than it already is. Going with this assumption (if it is true) I can conclude that the Audio properties in the “Project Properties” dialouge must be the same as the audio that I am rendering. Is this a right conclusion or is my assumption incorrect?

    To give an example:
When I right-click the audio on the Vegas timeline and go to “Properties” and then the “Media” tab I see that the “Attributes” of the file is this: “32,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo”. To render this audio to the best quality, I need to change to “Project Properties” Audio Tab to match these attributes. Is this the right thing to do?

2: Continuing with the “Project Properties” theme, I have a question about the “Field Order” under the “Video” tab. The following is from the Vegas Online Help:
    —–
    None (progressive scan):
Select this option when viewing the video on a computer. This option ignores interlacing.
    Upper field first:
Selpect this option for video that will be viewed on a television.
    Lower field first:
Select this otion for DV output or if Upper field first produces jittery or shaky output.
    —–
If I want to render an avi file as an MPEG-2 (DVD Architect NTSC video Template) and then create a DVD which will be viewed on a TV (and perhaps a computer also) which Field order should I choose and does it really matter?

    Thank you for any help,

    Michael M.

    1. I don’t know where you read that Vegas can’t improve audio – it does this better than any other NLE!Vegas can definitely resample, so set the render properties to the full DVD settings.

    2. If you use standard DV settings this will automatically be lower field first, so no need to do anything.

Well that makes much more sense (the fact that Vegas can improve audio)! Thanks for the help.

I also have another question about rendering the avi video as an MPEG-2 (DVD Architect NTSC Video Stream Template). I was reading the MainConcept MPEG-2 Plug-in help from the Sony website and it said that for NTSC DVD’s you should check the box next to “Write sequence display extension”. However, the default for the Template that I am using leaves it unchecked. What’s better?

    Thanks again for the help,

    Michael M.

Sorry, “Write sequence display extension” is not an expression I’m familiar with Michael – maybe an NTSC thing.

    Anyone?

Thanks for all the help Peter. I am moving this question to another thread.

re: project properties .. if audio is 32K/16bit the final audio will be determined by your final RENDER AS .. if you choose to render as DV.NTSC then the audio will be 48k/16bit .. is you choose to render as MPEG2 for DVD then it will use those spec’s for the audio .. on some media spec’s you can choose the audio 22K, 32k , 48k , 96k etc ..

re: field order … if your original clips are interlace then IMO keep them interlace for best DVD/TV viewing … it may not be the BEST for computer/web viewing but it’s all a give/take .. you could render out a version for computer/web viewing which then would be progressive .. changing interlace clips to progressive you will loose some quality .. if your clips are progressive/frame mode then keep your project as progressive and you have the BEST of DVD viewing on DVD-NTSC & web/computer …

How do you determine whether the original video was interlace or progressive?
    Original Video Stream Properties:
    Attributes- 720x480x24
    Format- DV
    Frame Rate- 29.970 fps

in V6 explorer ( check summary view) just highlight the clip and below on the V grey area it will tell you 720x480x24 etc.. interlace/progressive ..

if using V6 project media to look at current clips in project – again highlight clip and below it will tell you 720×480 etc AND will also tell you the field order – lower/upper then it is interlace .. if it says field order NONE then it is progressive …

Thank you so much. I was looking everywhere for the original properties of it and I just couldn’t find it. Thanks again.
