  • Using DVD logo on case and disk

Posted by Hollington Lee on July 10, 2005 at 10:29 pm

    Hi All-

I am delivering my first project on DVD. I would like to use the DVD logo to identify the disk as a DVD as opposed to a CD. My understanding is that I CANNOT use it unless I license it. Is that right? Have any of you done this?

When you deliver a DVD, do your clients care? Do you think this is important?

I’m wondering if putting the DVD in a typical black DVD case is enough to identify it as a DVD.

    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks.

You are correct in your observation. You are supposed to be licensed to use the DVD logo. Check the following link and its associated pages and it will give you a pretty good idea of what is and isn’t allowed.

That being said I have seen numerous instances of duplicated (burnt) DVD’s using the logo and know full well that the companies and businesses using it are not licensed.

Although the logo is copyrighted, the letters D and V are not, so simply choose a suitable font.

The Software that comes with the EPSON R200 printer has a number of different versions of the DVD Logo. Seems funny they can include them as clip art but officially we are not allowed to use them. I wonder how epson has the right to do so?

Yes, that’s a good question. I am beggining to wonder myself if my belief and what I have been told is incorrect. Have a look at this link from Disctronics. Disctronics being one of the worlds largest DVD replicators:

    http://www.disctronics.co.uk/ downloads/sales_docs/dvd_logos.pdf

In this PDF point #2 states “The use of DVD logos is strongly recommended but not mandatory” Nowhere does it state or mention any fee structure for the use of the DVD logo on ‘pre-recorded’ discs and this PDF is based around ‘General rules for DVD logos’. So I guess the whole matter of using these logos on pre-recorded DVD’s needs to examined further. When I get the time I might contact Disctronics here in Aussie and see what I can find out.

It’s ok to use it for replication.

IF the replication facility is licensed.

The facility I use has the license and we always use it
    on replicated media.
