Was rendering a project, I finished rendering and couldn’t open the drive from the explorer window (WD120 in an ADS 1394 case). Vegas 5 locked up (“not responding”) and I had to reboot — then everything was fine.

This happened once last night as well. I don’t seem to be having this problem with my USB2 drive (WD250 in an ADS Dual Link case).

I didn’t lose anything but it worries me — any ideas on why this may be happening and how to fix it?

Can only guess, but one thing that does happen sometimes is a temporary break in contact between PC and firewire drive – if the media for a project is on that drive Vegas can freeze. Check F/W plugs at both ends, and whether one could have been accidentally “waggled” causing a loss of contact.

IMO these 4 pin firewire plugs are really not up to the importance of the job they have to do.
Of course, it could also be a dodgy cable.

If this continues (and I have had the same issues on occasions) you most certainly have a hardware problem–most likely the cable or the control card in the drive. It will drive you absolutely batty if it is the control card because you will see the drive sometimes, and at others no—Rebooting will often get it back, but at other times no………..THats why I know longer use mainstream external enclosures—only premium for me-and better yet, I try to avoid external drives altogether.

I wouldn’t give up on external enclosures, in fact I never use anything else these days. Once they’re reliably set up, nothing gets near them for flexibility – being able to work on a project on desktop or laptop, at home or in a client’s office etc.

But – I hope you find the cause and fix it, Holly.

Thanks for all of your responses. Yes, Peter, I too like the flexibility of being able to move projects from one computer to another. I have a DVD burner in a Dual Link case. I am going to try swapping the drives and use the USB option on the Dual Link. See if I have more success with that configuration.

Nancy, you mention “premium” enclosures. Which ones are those? I thought that the ADS enclosures are the best ones.
