September 29, 2007 at 1:40 am in reply to: PN or PA for possible film out?

    Barry,

Thanks! I know it’s a trade off between disk space and that 20% or so you talked about in res. What about the P versus the PA in the cadence if we “Do decide to go film out?” If i read you correctly, the PA will be okay to edit in a 720 24p timeline (FCP) and go to NTSC with out any artifacts or exaggerated “flicker”?

Also, with a Firestore (not decided on yet) what is the advantage in shooting P2 versus QT other than the meta-data. What about disk space between P2 and QT?

    Thanks,

July 14, 2007 at 2:27 pm in reply to: FCS 2 Import/transfer naming bug?

    Noah,

I would have all of “scene 1” for instance ideally named the same, since they were the same shot just different takes. These are 10 sec. intros and not much diff between them except expressions of actor.

I thought I did this many times in 5.x and had no problem with the “Import P2 info” window there. It just seems that the new “log & transfer” window doesn’t like to have the “exact” same name for a file in the browser, it goes ahead and renames them successively.

I thought that was what the “take” and “log note” column was for. Guess I’ll just have to put a -1 -2 -3 etc. after each shot that is the same. Any idea if i can change the “global” prefs for import of audio? I only use ch 1&2 and the default is 1,2,3,4 so i have to uncheck 3&4 on every clip. Selecting all the ones to import and then unchecking 3&4 doesn’t seem to work.

    Thanks for your reply,

    Peter

    Gary,

Thanks for the explaining a somewhat ephemeral situation. You are one of the guys that tells the Good, the Bad, and the somewhat inevitable Ugly. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

[gary adcock] “It is not importing SD- it is importing your 720pHD content as the native DVCPROHD is 960×720
if you change that aspect ratio to say Square the 16×9 aspect ratio is correct.”

Gary, I’m the guy that saw your presentation in Miami then at NAB. If what you say is correct, and I know how knowledgable you are in this world, why does my browser say CCIR 601 and as you said the frame size is 960×720? I am seeing for the first time that projects arent “generic.” I sort of assumed they were and that sequences and playback setting for that sequence had to match – and that was it. With the huge difference in frame size with HD as opposed to 720×480 or 486 this new parameter is now brought home so to speak.

Jeremy, imports work fine with Control Q even if i’ve opened an old “SD” project. You are right though it is much easier to start with a fresh project.

My sincere thanks all today was a large learning experience,

Okay, now i know what you meant. I have to choose “easy setup” for whatever format/codec i am using, then it does import correctly. Still, I’m not sure why that changes pixel size as far as import to the browser. But it does work.

    Thanks all,

July 8, 2006 at 10:50 pm in reply to: P2 Log Import problem

    Jeremy, Noah, Tom,

I export from P2 Log, open the QT file in QT Player, and it is fine. I set up a new project, and I’m not sure what you mean by setting up the “Project” as 720p. I am setting up a “sequence” in the ” Load Sequence Preset” tab as DVCPRO HD – 720p. I then click “import XML” I navigate to the XML file i just exported from P2 Log and the dialog box opens. Destination = my project Sequence Settings I change from DV50 NTSC to DVCPRO HD – 720p I have the “Override with settings from XML” checked. Below that “Reconnect to Media Files” is checked. When I hit “OK” it imports, but in the browser it says under “Pixel Aspect NTSC – CCIR 601 and “frame size” says 960 x 720. When i import the QT created by P2 Log directly, it is a full screen HD image as it says in “Pixel Aspect” HD (970×720)

It seems to me that no matter what sequence settings i have, it should import into the browser as an HD not a CCIR 601 clip, no?

    What am i missing here???

    Thanks – Peter

I did send an email to Imagine, no reply as of yet, but it is Sat.

    David,

I had the same thing. Only the only way i could get playback was to uninstall BM and reinstall. Ver. 5.6.

Let me know if you get a “reliable” setup. For me, the same setup (not there now) that did not work, did work after i reinstalled the BM drivers. Someone posted about the latest ProApps update from Apple crashing BM. I have not been able to confirm this.

    Regards,

    Brian,

I have seen this with BM Extreme. It has happened to me when things got too hot (temp). I’m in FL and our AC went out last summer for a day. I got, what seems to be, the same B&W scrambled signal you describe for a while. Shut down, left it cool and opened up the cover of my old G4 and let it run with cover open and a fan on it and viola` until the AC was fixed. I was on a deadline of course. I don’t know if heat is a factor in your equation or not.

    Jan & Jeremy,

Sorry if i got overly sensative there. I was on a deadline and thought i could pull off something i wasn’t really ready for. Thank you both for your help.

I see there is more involved in getting that “film look” for lack of a better description with the HVX than the DVX. I was sort of mixing my metaphores there when asking about 23 or 24 timelines and i think i helped confuse myself.
