I purchased P2 Log which seems like a great way to alter clips metadata BEFORE import into FCP in my case. The problem i’m having is it seems to want to import HD 720p material as 4×3 aspect. The QT file it creates is fine, but i must be missing something on the XML export or import.

    Anyone?

Have you contacted Imagine directly- they are very responsive.

I’ve encountered this problem. I bet you opened the bin by double-clicking on the xml file created by P2 Log, then chose DVC PRO-whatever 720 etc. in the dialogue that next opens.

My work-around is to ensure that the FCP Audio/Video settings are already set to the correct format before you open the xml import. If you’re getting 4:3 it’s because your Audio/Video settings are set to that ratio. Seems that the dialogue you are offered on opening the xml file does not override the FCP settings.

    Hope it works for you.

The more I use the more I find P2 log indispensable, thanks imagine!

What are your steps in getting to FCP? Have you setup your FCP project as 720p? You know that 720p DVCPRO HD is 960×720 (4:3) which is an anamorphic 1280×720 (16:9) image?

Are you overriding the settings of the XML when importing in FCP?

    Jeremy, Noah, Tom,

I export from P2 Log, open the QT file in QT Player, and it is fine. I set up a new project, and I’m not sure what you mean by setting up the “Project” as 720p. I am setting up a “sequence” in the ” Load Sequence Preset” tab as DVCPRO HD – 720p. I then click “import XML” I navigate to the XML file i just exported from P2 Log and the dialog box opens. Destination = my project Sequence Settings I change from DV50 NTSC to DVCPRO HD – 720p I have the “Override with settings from XML” checked. Below that “Reconnect to Media Files” is checked. When I hit “OK” it imports, but in the browser it says under “Pixel Aspect NTSC – CCIR 601 and “frame size” says 960 x 720. When i import the QT created by P2 Log directly, it is a full screen HD image as it says in “Pixel Aspect” HD (970×720)

It seems to me that no matter what sequence settings i have, it should import into the browser as an HD not a CCIR 601 clip, no?

    What am i missing here???

    Thanks – Peter

I did send an email to Imagine, no reply as of yet, but it is Sat.

Okay, now i know what you meant. I have to choose “easy setup” for whatever format/codec i am using, then it does import correctly. Still, I’m not sure why that changes pixel size as far as import to the browser. But it does work.

    Thanks all,

    Peter

Do me a favor. Create a new, fresh project. Delete sequence 1 from the browser. Hit control-q and choose the proper easy setup (720p24, 720p60 or whatever frame rate you shot in). Create a new sequence. Now import the XML. Put a clip in the timeline, do you need to render? If so you have settings messed up somewhere.

It is not importing SD- it is importing your 720pHD content as the native DVCPROHD is 960×720
if you change that aspect ratio to say Square the 16×9 aspect ratio is correct.

what you are doing is correct it is just the computer is seeing the Aspect ratio of the content in the only language it knows.

Gary, I’m the guy that saw your presentation in Miami then at NAB. If what you say is correct, and I know how knowledgable you are in this world, why does my browser say CCIR 601 and as you said the frame size is 960×720? I am seeing for the first time that projects arent “generic.” I sort of assumed they were and that sequences and playback setting for that sequence had to match – and that was it. With the huge difference in frame size with HD as opposed to 720×480 or 486 this new parameter is now brought home so to speak.

Jeremy, imports work fine with Control Q even if i’ve opened an old “SD” project. You are right though it is much easier to start with a fresh project.

My sincere thanks all today was a large learning experience,

[Peter Sassi] “why does my browser say CCIR 601 and as you said the frame size is 960×720?”

The software as not as smart as it thinks it is, this is that scaling that I’ve talked about with the Kona cards – to get all of the info on to the tape it renders the image much like old anamorphic lenses do.
It takes something wide makes it “square- ish”so that it can get the most on tape that is possible.

I call this a Digital Anamorphic – it is digitally changing the aspect ratio thats all – NOT adding resolution or creating content from thin air. It is common in all HD formats HDCAM, Varicam, and all of the 1080 HDV cameras do this ( JVC’s 720P version of HDV does not)

    thanks for the praise also
