Hi Michael,

The BCC Optical Stabilizer can be used in two ways, as you have mentioned.

One is to generate a total camera lock-down of the scene. To achieve this effect, after image analysis is complete we set the Mode pop-up to Stabilize and then set the Stabilize pop-up to Translation + Rotation + Zoom. Then we select a reference from around which to lock the shot. The software will automatically scale the image to fit the frame. The autoscale feature can be disabled by unchecking the Auto Scale option in the Post Processing group.

The other way to use the filter is to smooth the camera jitter / shake. To do this, after image analysis is complete we set the Mode pop-up to Smooth. Then we set the Stabilize to suit – typically Translation + Rotation + Zoom is the most likely choice here. Then we set the smoothing range – generally speaking, a higher value in the Smoothing Range will yield a smoother overall result but it’s footage dependent so you’ll need to experiment with that. Same thing here with regard to the Auto Scale – it’s on by default but if you don’t want to use it, you can disable it by unchecking the option in the Post Processing group.

The Corner 1 and Corner 2 point pickers enable you to select only a portion of the frame for image analysis – there are cases where this option is invaluable but for the most part you can leave it at the default, full frame setting.

And finally, if you are using auto scale to fill the frame then you have the option to improve the image quality by selecting the image scale algorithm of your choice – if you are working with a noisy clip and need a smoother result then set the Quality pop-up to Magic Smooth or if you need a sharper result then try Magic Sharp. The default setting of Fast works well for most shots but I’d suggest trying them all so see what looks best. And again, this option is footage dependent so you’ll have to experiment to see what works best for the shot that you are working on.

Hi John,

The answer to your question is yes, you can keyframe the motion tracker target position so that it will track different pixel arrays over time to lock the lens flare into the scene. Then, once the motion tracker analysis is complete, you need to keyframe the offset x and y parameters in the motion tracker group at the same places where you keyframed the tracker target to make the movement appear to be uninterrupted.

I’d suggest that you download the very latest BCC 7 FxPlug installer and reinstall the software. It may be possible that you installed a BCC Unit, which did not include the UpRez filter and if so, that might explain the missing filter.

Okay – I understand what you are trying to do.

To trim away the black frames I think you need to create a nesting and then trim or cut back the nested sequence instead of directly cutting the filtered clip. Does that make sense? If so, can you try that to see if it works?

So here’s how I am using the BCC Optical Flow filter in Sony Vegas Pro 10b:

• Locate the BCC Optical Flow filter in the Video FX directory and drag it onto the clip that you wish to retime
• Set the Velocity parameter to the value that you want the clip to use

Note that you will see black frames at the end of the clip (if you speed it up) where there is no more image data to work with, ie, if you have a 5 second clip and set the velocity to 500 percent then you will have 1 second of video followed by 4 seconds of black frames. If you use the filter to slow down a clip, Optical Flow will generate synthetic inter-frames to produce the slow motion effect.

Velocity values between 0 and 100 will slow down the filtered clip, while values in excess of 100 will speed up the filtered clip.

I just tried BCC 704 32 OFX with Sony vegas Pro and it worked fine. Are you using Vegas Pro 10b or 10a? I’m using 10b – maybe that’s the difference.
