No idea if BetaSp has a 16:9 mode. I’d speak with the shoots Dp about that ahead of time.
Really working with anamorphic stuff in FCP is pretty easy. It’s actually easier to load in as 4:3 and leave it stretched. Then when you’re putting a clip onto the 4:3 sequence you right click on the clip and go into item properties -> format. Then just check off the anamorphic box. Once you do this you can drop the clip into a 4:3 sequence and FCP will letterbox it for you.
I’d double check things with the shoot’s DP ahead of time if you can. Also ask the producer what the delivery format if going to be. That will let you work out your workflow ahead of time.

Yes that is pretty much what I decided to do. Export the 4:3 pictures as seperate sequence and set them on a 4:3 track in DVDSP. Then on a LCD in 16:9 mode it should detect it’s 4:3 and simply pillar box correct? The way I exported the 16:9 sequence seemed to work ok. I put it on a 16:9 track in DVDSP and it was in the 16:9 aspect ratio looked great.

As they are the Video_Ts files are pretty useless. DVDs are encoded in such a way most software doesn’t know what to make of the files.
You want to get a prgoram called MPEG Streamclip. Google it. It’s a great free utility that lets you rip the files off of DVDs in a useful fashion. It lets you demux them to MPEG2 files or convert the DVD files into any type of QT video. If you can I’d simply demux the files and try to convert the MPEG2’s as it would be one less generation

16 mm itself has enough information to be transferred directly to HDCam or another HD format. This is actually a pretty popular shooting method for lots of TV Shows. If you have the cash and want the absolute best you can get a telecine done to HDCam for your HD.
That being said it will be expensive. The Blackmagic and Kona cards do a pretty nice job of upconverting if you don’t want to invest lots of extra cash.

Also double check your HDV deck settings that any kind of downconvert is turned off. If the i.link downcovert is on the computer picks it up as a DV signal not HDV.
Don’t jump to conclusions yet but I’ll level with you. i had this exact problem with 5.14 about a month ago and spend days trying to resolve the issue. In the end the only solution was ot downgrade to 5.1. Be sure to cover all your bases befroe jumping ot this conclusion though.

Any cash you save on the camera you’re going to lose in post on standards conversions or rendering time.

It will remain to be seen if it’s a good enough quality to be a finishing format as well(As DNxHD is for plenty of people)

I’m getting the feeling ProRes is Apple’s answer to Avid DNxHD codec.
