I transfered a bunch of 16mm a few years ago ( a mixture of footage, B&W, Ektachrome, some workprint, etc — out takes and crew shots from the 1970’s).

Anyway I had them Rank Cineteled both to Beta SP and MiniDv. I used the MiniDv (firewire) to edit (FCP4.5) and then a DVD. Looks pretty good. Now I want to get ready for HD. If I re-capture off of the BetaSP with a AJA, or Blackmagic card at 8 or 10 bit and re-edit will I be in good shape to output to HD in the future? Should the capture card be HD? Or is just the bit rate that’s important? I have no HD decks or monitors at this time, just SD — but want to get ready– so in a couple of years I can output this show in the highest quality.

    Thanks,

    Richard

There are a number of ways to “upconvert” your footage from Standard Definition (which you now have on the Beta SP) to High Definition, from real time using hardware, like a Kona Card or other converter, to software, compressor for example, or ReSizer.

    that being said

all you are doing is simply enlarging your footage. The transfer you made at Beta SP is nice high quality Standard Def Video. To truly get high def, you would have to re transfer all your film pieces to a High Def format, such as HDCam, or DVCPROHD on a high def telecine (see how this racket works?)

    sooooo

If you want to give the stuff some shelf life, the best compromise would be to make it 16×9 SD. To do this we capture at 8 bit uncompressed, then scale it up in Compressor favoring the upper part of the frame, rather than uniformly cropping top and bottom.

I rember reading about how to set compressor for optimum quality from either Ken Stone or Larry Jordan, both a couple o FCP gurus on the internet.

    hope this helps

16 mm itself has enough information to be transferred directly to HDCam or another HD format. This is actually a pretty popular shooting method for lots of TV Shows. If you have the cash and want the absolute best you can get a telecine done to HDCam for your HD.

That being said it will be expensive. The Blackmagic and Kona cards do a pretty nice job of upconverting if you don’t want to invest lots of extra cash.
