I’m failing ot see what the real plus of making a H264 file would be. The quality for a well-done mpeg2 is going to be quite good. Giving the school something they can look at is the most important thing. I wouldn’t assume the person looking at his reel will be technicial and know what to do with a H264 file. Giving them a standard video DVD covers all your bases. They can pop it in a DvD player or a computer and play it without any trouble. If you have some experience with DVD SP you can even make some nice menus and graphics to present your work professionally.
I’d doublecheck thier requirements and follow those to a T. With the number of applications a place like USC gets if your submission is going to take them an extra ten minutes to figure out they’re probably not even going to bother. Do things are simply as possible. Whatever format you use be sure to label all them clearly on the box and discs.

Quicktime really is the most universal option. It’s alrger but msot everyone will be able to view it.
If you have the space I’d suggest posting both a large QT version and a smaller AVI version.

Update: I talked with Kona support. We found that the computer did not have the firewire network port properly installed. We troubleshot the computer extensively but were unable to find a problem with it. Im’ RMAing the IO box sinceit appears to be a hardwareissue

Sorry I missed the last reply. To answer your questions:
Yes I have powercycled multiple times
Don’t know if I have the original sony cable but I’ve tried several 9 pin cables
I’m not going through any 9pin switches. The cable is going straight from the deck to the Io box
I have tried to select the default deck control for the Aja Io SDI easy setup installed by AJA’s software. The name given for device control is “Aja IO to Rs-422 NTSC”. when I try to select it in Log and Capture it tells me “This computer does not have any serial ports required by this protocol” -
Can’t say I’ve tested it myself but adding compression markers is supposed to help with motion heavy sequences. Just add a marker to your sequence then edit it’s properties and whck the comression marker box.

Yes it is an IO box. I downloaded the latest control panel software and drivers. As I noted before the box and firewire connection seem to be working. Video does come into final cut and captures fine. It just is not giving me device control so I’m forced to use captrue now for everything.

I found it’s interface to be a bit odd when I use it myself. The basic procedure is:
Setup your output in a sequence in FCP
Go to File > Export > Using Compressor
The Compressor window will open with your sequence listed
You should see the small box with “click to apply a setting” next to the sequence name.
Click the box and it’ll give you a popup menu with a long list of options. Select “DVD Fast Encode” or “DVD Best Encode” depending on the quality you need. There’s multiple options based on time and aspect ratio of your sequence. In the next submenu over simply select “all’.
You’ll go back ot the main compressor window with three things listed under setting now. Click the each box under destination and select where you want the file to go.
When that’s done press submit and the batch monitor winodw will open and show the progress of the encoding.You can tweak the settings quite a bit in compressor but the bulk of the time the basic ones will work fine.
