I’m kind of in the same boat except I’vebeen working as a tech for about a year now. I’ve got a decent amount of machine room and tech experience but I’ve found it’s tough to get people to take me seriously as an editor because of it. Can anyone offer any advice or links on what I should try to assemble as a reel when applying to assistant or editing jobs?

You may have to. One thing to check is if video being recorded on the Beta deck actually has that black bar in playback. It’s common for the deck and kona to be in sync but the monitor be out of sync.
That being said if you have the option of using reference there’s no harm in doing so. Basically you plug power into the Horita. Then plug the ref bnc form the Kona into one of the ports on the back of Horita. Then run another bnc from another port on the Horita to the Ref in port on the deck. Also be sure to set the kona card to use ref in in the control panel. Keep in mind that since the monitor won’t be plugged into that sync signal it may still drift when monitoring the deck.

Not sure I’veused the exact Kona card you have but I’d check the Kona control panel under Analog Out. Make sure its on the right resolution and set to Component(Beta)

Simply select all the sequences you want to export and control-click on them in your bin. select export using compressor. They’ll all show up in the compressor window.

Is the deck in record mode?

Is it jsut this m2v file that causes DVDSP to crash? There’s a somewhat common bug that causes crashes when clicking on m2v files in the finder or in file windows.

I’d try it with only one firewire drive hooked up at a time. If the footage is stored and being read off of both drives at once that could be creating a bottleneck on your firewire port.

I second this program.
Chances are the mpeg file you’ve got came from a DVD or something similar. DVDs “mux” mpeg tracks by combining the audio and video into one stream. Most programs don’t know what to make of this kind of file and just read it like a plain video file.

Aside from the larger demands on disk space I can see why that’d be a problem. 10 Bit uncompressed will actually let you do graphics and effects a little better too.
