November 2, 2005 at 11:08 am in reply to: Dell 24″ w/ HDLink

I have two Dell 24’s as Premiere Pro app monitors giving around a 45″ diagonal display. They are awesome for this purpose and blow away any 19″ combo. But the SD analogue performance is not really usable.

    Patrick,

I have had this once or twice. My experience is that once that project file is “corrupt” it is kaput. You will have to use an auto-save version if available. I set my autosave period to five minutes.

I use a Supermicro PDSGE dual core board with a D840. I’m switching the Decklink from the 32-bit PCI slot to the PCI-X slot and replacing the LSI PCI-X 133Mhz Megaraid card with a PCI-e version. It is only 1x though, but I don’t except the bandwidth to drop off.

I’ve only had one go at this sort of workflow and that was recapturing a PPro project that was digitised and edited on my laptop in native Microsoft DV. Ithen did a total recapture in uncompressed 10-bit SDI. I think I did play back some DV on the timeline but I wasn’t using the Mainconcept codec. Generally I just go uncompressed all the way, then do a project trim. But I will be doing more offline laptop DV editing in the near future. I also use a SD-Connect to convert SDI to Firewire. This all probably isn’t of much use to you. The Mainconcept thing may be an issue. Have you spoken to BM support about this?

    Daniel,

I’m using one of the new Supermicro PDSGE 955x dual-core mobos with PCI-x for the LSI 320 Megaraid and a 32-bit slot for the Decklink. I’m just about to get a second LSI (for the PCI-e bus) and put the Decklink in the 133MHz slot, even though I don’t appear to have any problems with the 32-bit slot. Errors like this a pain, and replacing hardware is not always the answer. My system is not on the approved list but it seems to work. The eight-disc U320 RAID wouldn’t be doing any harm for bandwidth as well.

I think the Asus 32-bit board has 1066FSB which may make a difference.

  • Thanks Luke,

Whilst I’m not HD at the moment, I might go that way as the HD PLus is $200 cheaper than the PCI-e SD card and maybe I can use the “HD-ready” moniker as a sales aid. Thanks again for the advice.

    Cheers,
    Peter

  • Operating both the Decklink in SD mode on the same bus as the media raid (133MHz LSI card) should’t be a problem? I’m assuming there wouldn’t be a bottleneck with all that bandwidth.

    Thanks,
    Peter
