Dell 24″ w/ HDLink
Posted by Ajpme on October 31, 2005 at 9:31 pmHey, I was planning on using the HDLink 2 with a Cinema Display 23″ but I’m needing to cut costs. I know that the 24″ Dell monitor uses the same main component as the Cinema Display. Does anyone know how it would fare as a studio monitor?

November 1, 2005 at 12:16 amI just tried this..
I bought a Dell 2405FPW to do this with.
The monitor is great as an alternative to the Apple display for a desktop monitor.
However, as a video monitor, it has some serious issues. The built-in scaler to make SD full screen from component or composite video is aweful. (The HDlink is much better.) The color for video isn’t all that great either.
On top of that, if you don’t own a Dell CPU, it’s nearly impossible to get tech support. The CPU number is required to log a support issue online.
I am returning mine today. I’ve already replaced it with a Sony LCD HDtv, which works great, and was less expensive than the Dell / HDlink combo.I guess I would ask exactly what you want to view before saying what will work for you though.

November 1, 2005 at 12:43 amI agree, the video resolution when i played back from composite and S-Video connection from my BetacamSP really sucks on this 24″ monitor. However, using FCP DVI-D, it is actually much better.

November 1, 2005 at 12:45 amI really like the Dell 24″ with HDLink. We have two suites set up this way, and a 3rd set up using the AJA HDP and a Dell 24″.
You are right about using the analog inputs. They aren’t great but it isn’t the monitor I would buy for analogue. Its strength is in using the DVI-D input which allows direct pixel mapping with the HDLink. It is incredibly sharp.

November 1, 2005 at 1:46 amWtih all due respect, you people are all crazy. ANY LCD MONITOR sucks with standard definition video. I have tried the Blackmagic HD Link and the AJA HDP on the Apple 23″ Cinema Display, the Sony SDM-P234b, the Dell 2405FPW, and the HP 2335 (the monitor that AVID uses for the AVID DS demos), and for STANDARD DEF – the image quality is terrible on ALL OF THEM. I have also recently had the dis-pleasure of using the Sony LUMA LDM-232, and the extra horrible Sony LDM-1410 in a cheap NTSC dubbing system. The LDM-232 looks teriffic in Hi Def but horrible for standard def, and the LDM-1410 is a complete joke (640×480 resolution) – and this is Sony’s new “lo end” pro monitor. Useless – you would be better off with a cheap TV at Circuit City.
With all of that said, the Blackmagic HD Link (and amazing product) works very nicely in HI DEF with the Dell 2405FPW, but ain’t gonna make any miracles in the DVI port with Standard Def video – and this applies to the Apple Cinema, and every other monitor I mentioned as well.
But that’s just my opinion. So what do you do for a standard def monitor, now that you can’t get the Sony PVM-20L5/1 ??? Don’t ask me.

November 1, 2005 at 3:22 amHey Bob. Have you checked out the JVC equivalent of the 20L5? Just wondering as you seem to look at a lot of gear. Some people on the cow give it favorable reviews and I’m curious as I have not seen it in person. The model number is:
DT-V1910CGU
The link to it is here:

November 1, 2005 at 2:15 pmI love that this monitor has analog component inputs. It is a no hassle way to monitor HD for focus especially when underscan is an issue. I am planning on buying at least one more soon.

November 1, 2005 at 9:27 pmBob’s right. LCDs are not suitable for standard def. They’re progressive scan and use square pixels. NTSC video is interlaced uses non-square pixels. I hope this is not a growing trend in the post industry.

November 2, 2005 at 11:08 amI have two Dell 24’s as Premiere Pro app monitors giving around a 45″ diagonal display. They are awesome for this purpose and blow away any 19″ combo. But the SD analogue performance is not really usable.
