Seems adobe have released everything BUT what we all need
Posted by Pablo2099 on September 27, 2005 at 10:04 pmNow I hear the anouncement that Adobe has released Photoshop elements 4 and Premiere elements 2. WTF are they doing to us – we are in desperate need of an upgrade for Premiere and it seems Adobe are releaseing new versions of everything they own EXCEPT Ppro2!!!
Are they deliberately trying to loose market share to the competition? Becasue I can tell you first hand they are and the exodus will continue with each day that passes with zero word on a much needed upgrade.

September 27, 2005 at 10:14 pmI’m not desperate for an upgrade.
Last thing I want is a host of new features and enhancements rushed to an imaptient demanding market just to keep up with the competition products.
I am happy to wait for a rock solid (stable) application that can operate on current hardware platforms. ie. not on the ragged edge of technology.

September 27, 2005 at 10:54 pmThe products that you have mentioned are on the consumer level of Adobe’s spectrum. Premiere Pro requires a lot more programming a much stricter integration, hence the slow release cycle. But, I am curious to know what you are looking for in an upgraded product?

Um…there hasn’t been a new release of any of the other pro video/audio products yet…I’d take a breath.
I understand the app isn’t what you’re looking for…but PPro has been doing nothing but gain pro marketshare since its inception, I suspect Adobe will pay the bills somehow.

I agree with you 100%. For someone that is going after the “professional space”, they are getting killed by FCP. IMHO, FCP’s penetration into the same space as PP is one reason that Adobe isn’t releasing PP for MAC. I know, that maybe with the new operating system for MAC the port may be easier, but why give your competition a leg up?
If I didn’t have such a big investment in PC’s, I’d be in the FCP camp for sure. I can wait for maybe a month or two, but if something isn’t out by the end of the year, that’s substantially better than 1.5, I’ve got 4 stations that I will look for alternatives for.

How are you coming to that conclusion? As you probably know, setting up an editing station is not the cheapest thing on earth. You really think people are willing to shell out 3000 + dollars, just because a product is not released for 18 months or so? I don’t think so. I have worked on plenty of NLEs and by far I have found PPRO is the “fastest” editor. Not as cumbersome as Avid and not as expensive as FCP (including the costs and such of a new MAC)

Well…the speed of the system depends on how well the operating metaphor models the editor’s way of thinking…and each person is different. Any NLE can be fast in the hands of a virtuoso operator.
…also conversely if you found the app that works for you…relearning something else and overhauling your editing style is painful. I do understand that portion of this whole discussion.

September 28, 2005 at 1:12 pmWow,
I guess that many of you do not work in a Professional Post facility. Don’t get me wrong, I really like PPro, but its “Pro” shortcomings are well documented. This board has listed them many times under “Feature Requests”. I will just name a few.1. Better Keyboard shortcuts (a recent topic)
2. MUCH Better Media management (do you guys regularly work on shows with 1000’s of clips? I don’t think so if you are not dying for an upgrade.)
3. Proper batch capture of sub clipped elements. (This is HUGE) If I have a sub-clip why do I have to batch cature the whole clip?
3. Reliable FRAME ACCURATE capture and batch capture.
4. Key-frameable speed changes. (On every Professional’s wish list!)
5. Proper File Locking and release Functions for Multi-User use on a SAN. (If you have a clip in your open project- No one else can use that clip on the SAN. (This keeps PPro from the making it to the majors.)This is just a few things that come to mind, I understand that many people here are hobbyists, but don’t speak about Pro issues just because they are not important to you. I am not trying to flame anyone here, but the tone of this thread bugged me.
I look forward to what Premiere “Pro” has in store for us. I am sure that they are working on some of these issues.
Best to all

September 28, 2005 at 1:24 pmGeez, I’ve got three projects on the go that won’t be finished until January next year. No way I would touch an upgrade before then. Most professionals schedule upgrades into their work flow, despite any new features that may be included. Anyway, it’s always wise for the hobbyist to try upgrades first, they complain louder and usually sort out where the problems are.
Just take your time Adobe, quality is always better than quantity.Redgum Television Productions

September 28, 2005 at 2:46 pmI have to tell you Prem pro needs better media mangement and handle audio channels on the time line better.
when editing on the time line you can’t unlink the stereo tracks if you need to. I shoot a lot of news style work and really have to do most of it in what is now Avid Liquid. If I want to use only one chanel or the other I right click on the audio track and seclect which track is used track one or two or none. If i need to process either track seperatly I “disband” the audio tracks and work with two mono tracks. Righ now in premiere you have to seperate the tracks in the file bin window and then bring each track seperatly to the time line and sync them up to the video. and is a much much slower process.
another feature I love in Liquid is the ability to move and copy tracks. using the up and down arrow and holding the ctl button I can move elements to other tracks, Holding the ctl key and dragging the element creates a duplicate element.
a ctl plus mouse click on a volume key frame also creates a fade up or a fade down.
there would be quite a few more more elegant features such as these that would make Prem Pro a much more efficient application.
I would rather work with premiere since it is more open to IO hardware and codecs and its integration with AE is great but so many of its steps to do and seemingly simple things can be a bit of a chore.
too bad we can’t hot rod our applications like we do cars and pull the parts we like from one and put them into others ……
