The table in this link shows that Apple mean that 4 (or 8) identically sized DIMMS are the ONLY option for ‘optimal performance’.

Thanks for that thought-provoking post.
I hope Apple sees it as the ‘reality chuck’ it is 🙂

Reading between the lines it seems some in the Filemaker Pro development community are taking hope that OS X 10.5 Leopard will finally allow multi-user (concurrent) sharing of datasets.

If that is so then that may open the way for Apple to develop other Pro Apps that can share their data without (or with less) latency…

Too true. However I cut some footage recently shot on DV at an evening party in a candle-it room. On screen the footage looked almost black, but (it was a rush job with no sorting-out time) I managed to salvage it by googling up the Too Much Too Soon’s SmartNoise plug-in (donation-ware), which takes a lot of the worst noise out – by averaging several successive frames. Surprisingly it works with hand-held footage – it just looks noisy after treatment instead of horrendous.

The multi-program rot started in the early 1990’s when Adobe chose to buy COSA After Effects from Aldus rather than fix Premiere 3’s miniscule Motion window.
Presumably since the moment they decided to discontinue Premiere for the rewritten Premiere Pro Adobe has been concentrating on a damage-limitation excercise to better integrate their associated programs. So they maybe got a head start over Apple in this matter.

Avid got a head start too, with their underlying media asset database thinking.
They are continuing to think in a future-proofed way:

Do you have a six-channel soundcard on your edit Mac to monitor the surround audio correctly?
With one installed you change your FCP audio configuration to correctly output six seperate channels of audio. You can assign each audio stem track to a specified output channel.

If FCP is still set up in a two-channel stereo output mode then I suspect all your audio is being mixed-down by FCP to a stereo mix before output being passed to Compressor.

I assume you can set up the necessary FCP six-channel output configuration without a multi-channel sound card, but since I have one (a small Presonus Firebox, since its only needed for monitoring purposes) I’m not sure. But I guess that’s what you have to do.

Does the latter part play in QuickTime Player?
If so can you set an in-point at the join point , and an out point at the end, and Save-As a Self Contained new movie, then try that in FCP.

I’ve got a full music score for a couple of 1 hour shows out of GarageBand relatively painlessly.
And inumerable shorter music links and bridges, and DVD Menu underscores as well.
I would only class myself as partially musically literate 😉 but the ability to assign any musical instrument to any GB midi loop makes it easy to get amazing ensemble sounds out of the software, with only a little fiddling.

The Symphony Orchestra and World Music Jam packs add a lot of excellent instrument generators, as well as their audio and midi loops.
