  • Switched on GAIN – anyway to reduce grain?

Posted by Chris Taylor on August 13, 2007 at 9:41 pm

A couple months ago we were on a shoot and I accidentally had the +12 gain switched on my Canon XH-A1. It was probably only the 2nd or 3rd time I used that camera at the time, otherwise I might have noticed the diference on the LCD. Is there any way at all to kick the grain down in post? I’m cutting on FCP Studio 2.

I have since custom set all the gain settings to 0 in case I accidentally bumb the switch again. Needless to say, I have nightmares about that day and have already tried concentrating really hard to send myself back in time to sneak in past my former self and flick that switch real quick. No luck on that so far though.

    Thanks for any help….

The reshoot filter is best. LOL…

https://www.chv-plugins.com/ has a plugin that is supposed to reduce the noise, might look into that. FCS doesn’t really have a filter designed for this.

+12 is a lot of noise. Color can mask out some of the noise depending on the shot. Sometimes it works well, other times it’s pretty obvious what’s going on.

But short of a re-shoot, nothing will ever make it look like the gain was never used.

    Hi
Too true. However I cut some footage recently shot on DV at an evening party in a candle-it room. On screen the footage looked almost black, but (it was a rush job with no sorting-out time) I managed to salvage it by googling up the Too Much Too Soon’s SmartNoise plug-in (donation-ware), which takes a lot of the worst noise out – by averaging several successive frames. Surprisingly it works with hand-held footage – it just looks noisy after treatment instead of horrendous.

    Or http://www.nattress.com does a paid-for one.
