General question: Apple’s approach to FCP/Final Cut Studio
After reading a recent article in LAFCPUG’s magazine in which editors gave their top 5 wants for a future version of FCP, I got to thinking about Apple’s whole approach to Final Cut Studio.
Some of the criticisms were aimed at the “round trip” approach that Apple uses to move material between various applications. Someone also decried the languishing state of FCP’s built-in titling capabilities, which are clearly outdated when compared with text tools in Motion that provide realtime on-screen feedback.
I’ve had the opportunity to play around on a Smoke system, and it seems to me that Apple is really missing the boat on integrating all of its various separate applications into a more comprehensive finishing tool.
FCP wouldn’t necessarily need all of the extended features of each of the separate Studio applications, but it would be great to see more of those technologies become integrated into FCP instead of Apple introducing more outboard apps.
Here are some ideas:
-Integrate Motion’s text, tracking and mask tools, replacing Title3D and FCP’s crude garbage matte filter. Basic paint tools would also be great.
-Integrate Motion’s 3D environment, allowing FCP’s motion tab to control X. Y and Z space properties. Leverage the GPU for OpenGL acceleration of all 3D transformations and Core Video filters.
-Integrate Soundtrack’s mixing tools and filters
-Provide more intuitive formatting controls, similar to the Geometry room in Color
I think FCP’s editing paradigm and toolset is strong, no need to overhaul it. But workflow could definitely be improved. Smoke’s editing interface seems weird if you’re used to FCP/Premiere/Avid, but where it really shines is in its smooth integration of tools within one application. Apple could learn a lot from Discreet – oops, I mean Autodesk Media and Entertainment.
Check out this video to get an idea of what I’m talking about – it’s the one titled “Discreet Smoke for short-form editorial”:
