Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound
I am having difficulty creating a Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Master DVD. I read the manuals for FCP, Compressor and DSP and I can’t seem to get it to work. Does anyone have any experiance doing this that can hep? My work flow is as follows:
I receive 6 WAV files from my audio engineer which were created with ProTools and labeled according to proper 5.1 surround sound placement, (C, L, LF, LS, R, RS) I import the files seperately into FCP6 and after I am done editing I export to Compressor. I drag the Dolby digital Pro 5.1 compression setting into the batch window. It is suppose to seperate the labeled files automatically. ( Their doesn’t seem to be a way to confirm this step until you are done) I then import the AC3 file that Compressor creates into DVD Studio Pro. (It still seems that I am not able to confirm I am working with the proper 6 channels – it appears as a single AC3 file.) I then build and burn a DVD only to find out when I play it thru a surround sound system that even though it reads as a Dolby 5.1 surround sound file. It is actually only playing stereo. Any ideas? -

Do you have a six-channel soundcard on your edit Mac to monitor the surround audio correctly?
With one installed you change your FCP audio configuration to correctly output six seperate channels of audio. You can assign each audio stem track to a specified output channel.If FCP is still set up in a two-channel stereo output mode then I suspect all your audio is being mixed-down by FCP to a stereo mix before output being passed to Compressor.
I assume you can set up the necessary FCP six-channel output configuration without a multi-channel sound card, but since I have one (a small Presonus Firebox, since its only needed for monitoring purposes) I’m not sure. But I guess that’s what you have to do.

I think I solved the problem. Each wave file in my FCP project needed to be saved individually and exported as .aif files. I then manually assigned each channel in compressor from those aif
files. Since I don’t have surround sound on my system I took the burned disk to a local Best Buy and played it in their theatre. I heard the seperation of the channels so I beleive it worked. I sent the disk to the audio engineer for evaluation.
